Running too warm? Should I try to run cooler?
I just read this on the Spoon website:
" If water temperature exceeds 85 (185F) degrees, Honda engines will loose power abruptly. By making water temperature low, engine power will subsequently be increased. "
My car usually sits at around 180-190 F, right where are thermostats are at. Do you think I should look into a lower thermostat, like the spoon one, which opens at 149 and is fully open at 158?
If what spoon says is true..maybe this is a worth while mod?

Just my .02
ive seen a few stock cars reach really high water temperatures on the
dyno, i guess there is a power loss associated with higher temps,
but nothing like ""If water temperature exceeds 85 (185F) degrees, Honda engines will loose power abruptly""

Actually it is true. The computer strategy is to pull timing out as coolant temp reaches a predetermined value. This is a function of safety, to make the car less prone to detonation/preignition. While I was dyno tuning a GSR, I could look at the scan tool and see as the temps hit around 200F ish, the car would not reach total timing advance. This directly correlated with a drop (signifigant) in power on the dyno. Yep, it is true.
This is some weak *** bullshit. Its old school technology...a hot motor with cold gas is where its at. You want the motor to be hot, but have the air intake temp and gas to be cool. I know plenty of guys, in full race cars that wont even turn the dyno on until they make 4 or 5 passes because the motors not hot yet. I dont even turn my race car off once to let it cool down. As long as the air temp is cool and the motor is not totaly running hot (well over 180) then your good to go. If anyone has any. Just because a thermostat opens earlier, doesnt mean its not going to get to the same temp. Its all in the flow of it...hince thats why some people drill them out bigger. Most of what I am saying is on full blown race cars as I realise a lot of you cant do the stuff we can on a race car on the street to acheive this. I have also seen when cars are to cold they mis....esp turbo cars.......Mike
