What do you tell a friend who refuses to wear gear?
I've got an idiot friend who just doesn't get it. I've shown him footages of wrecks, stats, etc. and it's not getting through. I've tried taking him to a bike shop to try on jackets, etc, but he just laughs and says, "you look like you're planning on going down."
He's a good friend, and don't want to see him get hurt. And suggestions of, "well, he'll learn one way or another" really won't help here. He just doesn't realize what could happen.
Any suggestions that's helped "de-squid" your friend would be appreciated. BTW, as soon as he passes the road test and gets his license, we'll be enrolling in MSF.

Well, no one ever plans on going down or does it on purpose. That's usually what I say to people doing stupid *** stuff. Every person who's been killed on a motorcycle didn't walk out the door thinking, "I'm going to get into a fatal accident today..."
Take the MSF first, before getting any licenses.
Also, when walking alongside him, step on his foot, and shove him to the ground. Then say "try that at 35mph and see if you get right back up." Then walk away.
Also, get him to read the Hurt Report. http://www.clarity.net/~adam/hurt-report.html that is what actually convinced me i'd be going down someday and would need to wear gear at all times.

Try to show him some jackets that he likes to wear or something. Something that will make him look good with his bike and helmet. Also tell him that gear is made to be worn when ridden so it may make the experience more enjoyable. Also what if a car hits him and he goes down, he could be seriously injured or even killed.
Tell him you won't ride with him until he wears gear because you don't want to have to see him smeared across the pavement. If you continue to ride despite your objection to his gear selection you're condoning it, despite what you say verbally.

That's funny, doooooo it!
I know you mentioned showing him footage of wrecks, but have you showed him pictures of what happens to your skin when you slide across the asphalt at 60+ MPH? Some people are just hard headed, like my neighbor, crashed his bike wearing no gear except a helmet. Broke his ankle rashed up is upper body. He still rides with no gear

Agreed

"There are 2 types of riders, those who have gone down and those who are going to go down."
"Well, I guess there's 3 types, cause I'm not going down!"
hee hee, to lighten things up a bit...
Anyways, to answer your question... it seems like to me you've done enough. Unless he's a complete moron, he is aware of the possible consequences. But, he is his own man, it's his life to live. You could do what Apocalypse mentioned, if you want to press the issue.

Thanks for the responses. I'll email that hurt report, and I think the best suggestion was not to ride with him until he gets gear.
Thanks again, and hopefully, he won't learn the hard way.

Here's an idea....Salt Lake City is a pretty big place so i am sure you have a hospital with a lot of ER traffic.
Take him to the hospital when someone is in who is like your friend and decided to not wear anygear. Show him in person what pavment at any speed can do to a human's skin.
Try to get in right before they disinfect and cut off any dead skin....i bet he wouldnt even have to see it..he can just listen to the pain that the person is going through.
If that doesnt work then go get a new friend, to save yourself from the headache of a buddy in the hospital from inevitable road rash.

buy him a sport rider magazine and tell him "look, all the pros in motogp are wearing it!!"
seriously though, if it came down to it and is important to you, why not buy him a textile jacket? maybe he doesn't want to invest into a jacket himself, but maybe he'll wear it if you buy one for him.

I disagree. You're not his parents and there's a good chance you're spending the money on something that will never get used. If he's a good friend and money is the issue then it's likely he's aware of that so he can lend him the cash.
Otherwise it's like buying condoms for teenagers. They know it's in their best interest to use them, especially of they're handed over but the kids are pretty much convinced they're not at risk and you've wasted your money.

I have a couple friends like that and they never end up riding with us anyway because their dumb asses are usually still hung over by the time we are heading out. I like to be home before they are having their cocoa puffs, so I can do other things with the family.
It obvious what a riders intentions are for owning and riding a bike are and the ones who buy them to look cool are usually the ones who don't wear gear as well as buy the latest radest bikes and garage them anyways.
I say **** em. When my buddy says he'll look dumb riding with gear, I just tell him that I'll look even dumber riding with a friend with no gear.
I try to be understanding at first. I mean at one point I rode with only jacket, gloves, and helmet (jeans and tennis shoes in place of leathers and boots). So I give them some time but too much lagging gets a
and a lot of harrassment from me.

if your "Friend" will not heed any of the good ideas listed above, specially the ideas that's are tempered from riders with any serious tenure in the saddle, it is time to get a new friend...
