Default Thoughts on the MSF...

Im a 2nd year rider, decided to take the MSF simply because it was free, lowers insurance, and i can get my liscense..

Funny thing was, they have one 'sportbike' a ninja 250, and i they assigned it to me.. Cant wait for figure 8's on a sport bike

A couple thoughts..
This is GREAT for people who never rode a bike. The first half of the day you didnt turn your bike, it was all stop, starting, feeling the clutch out, ect.ect. They really get you the BASICS. For any exp. rider, its a bore.

Some things that I thought were RETARDED...
-AN exercise where there were 4 cones. in a LARGE Oval. The object was to shift your bike from 2nd to 3rd gear in the MIDDLE of the turn. There reasoning was, you should know how to shift in a turn.. Needless to say I was waiting for someone to low side.
-Im constantly getting yelled at for only using 2 fingers on my levers. He told me, what happens if you fall. Your lever will get crushed agianst your fingers... Im like..WTF? I can gurantee you im not holding my handle bars the whole way to the ground.

There was somthing else but i cant think of it..

Cliffnotes : MSF is good for begginners, but everything they teach may not be for the best.

I agree that MSF probably doesn't have much to teach the seasoned rider. However, it is a GREAT way to introduce new or returning riders to riding.

When the n00b rider mistakes the brake lever for the clutch and grabs a handful.

Well thats the place to expletive it up. Rather have someone go down in the course than on the street. Do it ounce and you wont do it again.

Um last time i checked if your carrying a fast pace through a turn, and you let off the gas, shift, gas it, creates a large change of motion. I.E. releasing pressure from tire/pavement.

Just like letting off the gas in a car in the middle of the turn, causes the *** end to go.

It may not effect on a slow turn, but these newbie riders are going to carry these skills from here on out. I just dont feel it was the smartest skill to teach.

MSF helped me learn the basics when I started to ride. I recommend to anyone that's interested in riding or getting a bike.

If you know how to do it, you can shift deep in a turn with no problems.

I'm a MSF Rider Coach, and I have a few issues with the course, but overall I think it's great for new riders.

That's what i thought. But when i took it, there were 12 people in my class, and 5 people graduated, including me, and the other 4 were still absolutely terrible. One girl progressed almost exponentially during the course and i'd probably be ok riding next to her, but the other 3 were just plain terrible riders and i don't even know how they passed. The only other person from my class that i liked was one of the people that failed. I had an overall terrible class.

I agree with the overall idea of the class. It's great for new riders to develop good habits, and to help correct the bad habits of seasoned riders.

There will always be the showoffs...in my class, there's a guy who came in on a brand new Triumph which he bragged about costing him $17k. But during the course, he had no idea what he was supposed to do and kept asking me questions....WHILE we were riding!!!

Yeah, I remember....I thought that was the stupidest exercise....the large oval...

You had to pick up speed, then downshift to 2nd in the straights of the oval, and then mid turn, shift up to 3rd....

haha, there was a guy like this in my class, except he had a 954, thought he was hot sh*t, he had a lot of difficulty with some of the more "technical" parts of the class...like the part where you have to weave in and out of cones

Has anybody taken the advanced MSF course? I would really like to do it, but I don't think my RC would be a very good candidate

I took the advanced course on my Ducati 996 with a 190 rear tire (switched to a 180 about two weeks after the class). It wasn't easy, but I did it, I really had to counterweight ALOT because the bike has such a poor turning radius, I swear I was about to drag pegs.
