Default Is $800 dollars to add a used a/c setup too much? San Antonio people help me out!

I recently moved to San Antonio and my CRX did not come with a/c installed. I was checking around the local junkyards, I found a place which sells and installs used motors and such.

They quoted me $800 for the complete setup with install of a used a/c setup.

Now my question is do you think this is too high of price for a a/c system or does anyone know other places or prices in San Antonio?

Thanks
Mig

Well to answer your questions..

I dont have time or a garage to work on the car otherwise Id do it myself. Thats the biggest reason why I was asking on pricing for a complete install..

Is your car a complete A/C delete car? Meaning you have no condensor, no evaporator, nothing whatsoever?

If so, get all the junkyard parts except for the compressor, and the drier. Make sure the condensor and evaporator and the lines have no sign of damage, and the fins are mostly straight look in tact.

Install what you can, and then take it to a shop and get a new/rebuilt compressor, have them charge your system and do a leak down test on it, and if it checks out okay have them go ahead and install your compressor, drier and misc and then recharge your system.

Don't let them sell you a used compressor or a drier. They won't be worth your trouble and you won't be happy in the long run.

Thanks for the info Jonathan..

But as I said earlier.. I dont have time or a garage to handle the install. Besides all my tools are locked up in storage until i finally move into my home (then ill have a garage) but by then the 100+ temps will be in full swing..

As for the parts and install they said they would warranty it for a year.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that yes my car did not come with a/c installed from the factory thats why I need the entire setup done (engine compartment & cabin)

i sold my whole ac system for $100 shipped. but i guess if they install it and it works and everything, then $800 isnt bad. i guess it just depends on how much you want ac.

If they install it and charge it with freon for you that's a great price. Otherwise keeping shopping.

I'm currently putting the A/C back in my car, Austin here, the problem is charging. I had to convert mine to R134a b/c you can't get the R12 yourself and it's expensive.

$800 installed and charged isn't unreasonable IMHO.

The air conditioning system for the CRX brand new from Honda was a $740 accessory. That was without the labor charge for the dealership to install it.

Is it a new system, or a used one? To have a shop install a new AC was $1100 in my buddies 91 Civic Si.

If you are getting a new system for $800, then that seems like a great deal. If that is a bunch of used parts, then I am not too sure.

i'm looking to get my a/c fixed too..i have an a/c but the shop i took it too said my compresor is leaking and my condensor and evaporator are bad...he recommended just getting a whole new system.its still runnin on r12 coolant so thats needs to be updated too..we're talking lines, compressor, evaporator, condensor.he gave me and estimate of $1297.this is for all the parts (brand new) and labor included...and its charged up...is that too much??or should i get a second opinion...??

Darn, wish you weren't so far away. I would install the system I have for sale into your car for a quarter of that cost.
