Project Tweak: PWR Barrel WAIC install into CRX
Yet another neat fab project to come out of ICON... The following are two threads combined into one from another forum (http://www.CRXCommunity.com)... just thought some people here might be interested in the fab work and install of this huge WAIC into a CRX.... Enjoy! 8)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
So once again, we're tweaking with Tweak (Jonny_Blacks car)... lol! Only this time, things are getting juuuuust a bit more serious in the intercooler-department
Today we're installing a manifold that i've had laying around for a while... it'll allow him to finally have a/c back. Also, we're installing a PWR liquid-air intercooler that i've also had laying around forever, to replace his air-air one.
So, for now, all i have done fabrication wise is a single mount for the intercooler, and the cold-side charge piping... still needs to be finish-welded of course, as it is just tacked together for now, but it was already looking cool enough, i figured i'd go ahead and start a thread about it.. hehe.
Anyway, enjoy the pics! I'll post more up here as we get this turbo setup done on his car.. should only be another few days working at it after-hours and stuff

Tweak will once again, be siiiiiiiiiick

Fast-Forward to a couple days and a different post later...

New Updates!
Ok, so after a few hours spent tonight after-hours messing with it, I have the intercooler and charge piping made... all 1 piece to
That is a very nice thing about this setup... less couplers to have that can blow off... actually, with this setup, it'll be impossible to blow off a coupling, because it simply won't be able to move enough to do it.. hehe. How bout some pictures?
So, here i am welding up the setup:

And here it is completed... the only thing left to do, is add the BOV flange, which i'll have tomorrow, and we're set!

And here is a part that i really am proud of for whatever reason... i messed with it earlier, but basically, it is a 2.5" to 3" transition in the middle of a bend. I also didn't have any 2.5" piping, so i cut down 3", and re-welded it. Both pieces are fully welded inside and outside, and then the outside welds were smoothed out to make it look sorta seamless... it just SCREAMS sex when you see it in person

Yes, there is a welded seam that runs right down the middle of these pieces... but its nice and smooth looking
:

Overall view:

And of course Jonny_Black chilling out next to his improved baby:

(note how dirty he is... yep, he was working OVERTIME on his car tonight! hahaha! Just messin with ya Jon
)
Anyway, next up is to rebuild the condensor support with something more 'custom', mount the heat exchanger for the water lines, mount the water pump, and build a water tank out of aluminum... good times 8)

well if you read that last line there..john mentions that we are going to make a tank, and also its going to have a heat exchanger in the form of a motorcycle radiator.
the welds are lovely of course..john does great work. I am usually very hands on when it comes to my baby...so I feel a kinda bad that john is doing most of the work, but conflicting schedules, and the fact that he puts so much time working at titan makes this project a little slow..but I think its progressing nicely. I guess I just miss her.
soon soon...hehe

. That's cool.

I'm not sure of the current price on the intercooler... i've had this one now for the last couple of years, and its basically been doing nothing on a shelf. If you contact Earl or Mike Laskey, they are PWR dealers, and can get you really good pricing on it. For size, this one we're using is the biggest they offer (afaik), and is the 6"x10" core with hose barbs instead of AN fittings for the inlet/outlet.
That's cool and all, but that won't allow him to run a/c again. Unless they're going to build custom hi/lo lines that reroute the system. I don't see any space to do that and still have the system very functional.

Awww, you read our minds
the lines in this case are going to be very very custom... routing quite differently than stock

Im loving that transition man
Are yall worried about it getting heatsoaked wen the car is idling at a stoplight? Or have yall come up with a nifty way to defeat that like yall have with everything else?

JB doesn't sit at stoplights! He's like a ninja, and zooms on by them with stealthlike speed yO!
j/k..
Well, not too worried about heat soak in the tubing, and the intercooler is of course insulated with moving water, so there won't be much heatsoaking occuring there. But whatever heatsoaking does occur, it is an unavoidable thing for the most part (unless you remove as much of the system from the enigne bay as possible, but then that defeats the purpose of this setup in the first place), so its just a 'deal with it' sorta thing... lol!

Nah, we'll create a huge bubble.... like a big hamster ball, and a/c the entire thing... that way the car will always be in the a/c, and youll still be able to roll with traffic
Just make sure all the refrigerant is out of the a/c lines before welding anything on them
Can't wait for these a/c line pics
