need help- engine noise at 3000 rpm
hey guys i recently purchased a 01 s2k with 44000 miles on it- car runs and drives fine. i have been driving hondas for a while (last car was an 02 rsx type S)- havent heard a noise like this since my 87 supra. at 3000 rpms- i hear a fast knocking kind of sound- only during 3000 rpms. not at 2900, not at 3100, or anywhere else at the rev range. all fluids are fresh ( changed them all when i purchased the car) it only had 46k on it. I took it to honda and they said they "dont seem too concerned" with the noise and "there are so many electronics it is hard to hear what noises are what". i dont assume this is a normal noise... anyone else have it? any suggestions on what it could be or how to fix it (got a fresh new warranty to use). thanks for all your help
sorry i did not give enough info- its easiest to here the noise while at a stop and maintaing the revs at 3k. if i let off the throttle or apply more- the noise goes away.

do you only hear it when the engine is not under load?

about if its just the car running blah.... thats what i am trying to figure out. its all the time- just allot harder to hear under load. like i said though the noise only happens at 3k rpm. i had the manager at honda drive the car around with me in it- she said she heard the noise too but the mechanic said he was not to "terribly worried about it"

its not his car and not his dealership. he just wants to get back to his 30 oil changes.
specifics...its definately coming from the engine bay?
is it a knocking or grinding?
does it ever for some reason get louder?
what does the sound remind u of?
what was your first thought when u heard it?

to be honest- the noise sounds like my 87 supra which had a rod knock for the first 5-6 seconds of a old start. it had over 200,000 miles on it and didnt end up going doo doo until the head gasket blew
The only thing I know of is a timing chain, but it doesn't sound like a knock as you discribe. It happens with my 23 year old motorcycle. Most Hondas are, I believe, belt driven timing gears, where as the two above mentioned are chain. When the chain tensioner isn't doing its job, you'll get a noise at the rpm's you're talking about.
I had a terrible harmonic noise at exactly 3000 rpm. It gradually got worse until I changed the drive belts at 27000 miles and it went away. Worth a try.

The chain tensioner is my guess too. There is a diagnostic for it that a mechanic can perform.

Just turn up your radio so you dont hear it anymore
lol j.k but yeah man try and have a, i would say s2k specialist check it out. Alot of the honda mechanics dont work on s2000's on a basis so they wont really know what to hear for. Yeah the drive em here and there but they dont drive em on the basis like we do. If its not right to you then do whatever you can to fix it. Remeber your not driving a 5k$ car. Your driving 1 of Hondas finest cars. So tell em to fix yo shiz later bro and good luck!

hey yea i have the same problem of my 05 s2000 as well, i bought it used with 7000 miles only, but after i bought it, i found out that it might have been abused previously, and i found out whenever the engine rev over 3000, the knocking sound from the transmission occurs when the car is neither accelerating nor decelerating, means no pulling from engine braking nor pushing to the gears, (especailly when going downhill.), the sound doesn't seem normal to me, but i went to honda dealer twice, and both mechanic said it's normal, but i'm sure that's not, i really wanna send the car to any s2000 specialist to fix that, anybody knows any s2000 specialist? please help
yea the asshat who had mine before i found out after purchasing hadnt changed the diff or tranny fluid- (tranny okay but he should have been changing diff fluid)- had different rear tires then fron tires (diff brand)-- my guess is high school kid. I think his driving had allot to do with some of the weird noises i hear- hey navy if you hear anything before i do about that noise let me know
Honda has an updated clutch disc for that year. It's out of warranty now so will pretty costly. Talk to you're dealer they might goodwill it. The clutch makes a vibrating/growling noise at 3,0000 rpm. It's more of a noise than a performance problem.
