semi-OT Odd HPDE accident
Looks like he put his left wheel in the dirt and it hooked when he came back on and brought him back to the right. Looks expensive. I can't believe they had cars lined up that far out at pit-out.

Wow! Stuff like this confirms my belief that the most danger I face when doing HPDE events are other drivers, not something I would do! That truly sucks! The NSX driver must be furious! Those two drivers weren't even driving on track!
Not that I can afford one right now, but I will move up to a car with that high capability when I know I can handle it. I hope he has good insurance, for the sake of those other drivers.

Thats really sucks!

Last time I checked, there was no such thing as insurance when you are on the track.

Some insurrance companies will cover on-track incidents.

Thats what I couldn't believe. I've never been to Pocono (where it happened), but it looked like there was enough of a wall that they could line up teh cars back behind it instead of way out there.

i second that... drive on track at your own risk dont expect the other driver insurance will cover it.
Even if it is their fault. Stay away from drivers like that.
And that was stupid for them to be pit so close to the course

Yeap.
In some cases if there is no timing involved they consider it a school, then the insurance will cover it. But I am sure all the companies are becoming more and more aware of such schools, and probably have exclusion clauses.

They weren't even driving; someone controlling the event made the mistake of pitting the cars out there. They were sitting ducks.

Sometimes it's not that easy if you are running in the same group.

Hmmm, I guess it would be kind of hard to turn on your engine and back up really fast after you see the EVO lose control and coming right at you, especially if there's another car parked right behind you

If one didn't know any better and just viewing the in-car cam, one would have never known there was any type of wall separating the hot pit from the track. If there was, those cars lining up to enter the the track should have been behind it. I simply had no idea there were tracks like this.
Talk about dangerous. Just think if there had been a track coordinator out there directing the cars, he would have been a dead man.

Now it all makes sense, I saw these three cars @ Pocono this weekend all lined up. I was thinking must have been a bad DE event! This was the "east" course at Pocono which is usually used for motorcylces. That stretch is basically a straight away that has a slight kink where the driver lost it. It is an unusual place to get out of control. There are no barriers anywhere @ Pocono except for the corner workers to hide behind. Definetely a bad deal, all three cars (NSX, EVO, and Infinit G-coupe) were heavily damaged. You dont see too many accidents @ pocono because there is not much to hit. But this course has the cars grid right next to that back straightaway.

When somebody asks about this, my standard reply is that you need to be aware of the danger that you could completely ball up your car, and you should not be on the track with something that you are not at peace wtih losing.
Having said that, however, I am aware of on track incidents that State Farm has paid for. In a Speedtrial event, somebody went off at VIR in exactly the same place that Kleinubing went off and started his roll. The problem was A032R that cycled out and just weren't gripping even though he had been able to grip at exactly that same speed the lap before.
State Farm paid for something like $2800 worth of damage to an entirely crinkled up right side of the car. But they also made it clear that it was a once-per-lifetime payment.

I can't run the video here at work, but Pocono has three different courses (North, South, East - though sometimes they are used in combination to create larger courses), but of those only North Course gets the real pit lane.

My thoughts exactly. It's just common sense to not have them sitting that close to cars on the track, without some sort of barrier between them.

their "Events" link lists a HPDE and Hot Laps event for Pocono East for last weekend.
