NEED Experts ADVICE!!! STARTING COMPLETE CRX REBUILD- want opinions!!...
i am about to purchase a CRX! i had one for 3 years and was saving up for a complete transformation.. and it was stolen 2 months ago. SO, now i am about to buy another one. If i was going to buy another CRX... which one would you buy between the 2. A 1990 DX, or a 1989 Si. Now before you say the Si, i have the chance to buy the 1990 DX for 800- 1000 bucks and the body is very straight. But if the Si provides advantages i am aware of, please let me know. I am looking to do a motor swap on both of these.
I am very inexperienced with Crx's but am a pretty capable mechanic. I have been reading for months and now am ready to jump in completely.
So- My budget for right now is around 4000 bucks. I am trying to get as much done as possible. This includes paint as well. I am not needing the FASTEST car out there. Plus, this will be my 1st engine swap in a crx. i have heard of the B16's and 18's and also the ZC's. What are the advantages and disadvantages to these motors?
1)what car should i buy
2)what engine should i get... and what would be an approximate cost for complete engine swap... meaning.. from purchase of motor to all the little things. and how long would it take to do the swap?
3)i want this to be a daily driver, so what would be the best suspension upgrade/mod for a daily driver that i want to look sweet, perform well... but be comfortable for my 1 hour commute.
4) i want a very clean body kit. I want something that doesnt look like a "body kit" but gives a more aggressive look and has clean lines. (if you have ever seen "nikozai" on NorCalCRX.com.. his CRX body is exactly what i am going for.)
5) any other suggestions would be great. I am going to try and do as much of the work as i can. I feel like i am competent enough to do it. ANY HELP, SUGGESTIONS and ideas are greatly appreciated.
anyways- sorry it was so much in my 1st ever post!

You need to do some homework. 4g's isn't going to get you much. I would get the dx, for one reason, sunroofs suck. A b16 swap is going to cost you about 2g's when its all said and done. You might as well do the suspension when you do the motor swap, you'll have most of it loose. Also do the exaust, might as well, you'll have some of that loose. Swap will probably take you a day or 2, depending on how mechanically inclined you are.
the body kit you are reffering to is a wings west copy of the 'mugen' crx kit, good luck finding an actual mugen kit, but ww still makes them.

suspensions are adjustable. dont worry about it

ok im going to list a realistic suggestion based on your budget.
hasport mounts and linkage
b18a (full ls swap)
that leaves money to paint the car and gives decent power. you can also have fun with cheap bolt ons and all parts are easy to find and usdm.
if you plan on swapping its much easier with an SI because of MPFI. the dx is a little more "fun" with wiring.
body kits suck hard, not going to comment on them.
guess theres also the ZC option, which is a DOHC d-series. thats another good starter swap since it isnt mandatory to buy mounts. but i cant comment too much on this engine since i never ran one.
just research first and find people who are honest about how much thigns cost. some people like to downplay their costs to impress others by how little they spent.
might sound crazy but people do it.
happy swapping

thanks for you're responses. I talked to peter from "rywire" last night, and he gave me some helpful suggestions as well. i am now looking to get into this for a little more, but i feel it will be worth it. I first stated my budget was 4K (after the purchase of car) but now it is looking like 7 or 8. I am realizing as i do more research that to do what i want.. i have to spend the cash. NO WRRIES ... it look to be worth it.
So the 2 motors i am now looking at are the B18C or B18C5. I know it a bit more money.. but these motors seem to be the way to go.
So, with that out of the way... my only other questions are... what suspension specifically should i be looking to get, and what exhaust system?
Thanks again for all of you're input. I realy appreciate it.
