Why dont you guys just drop it out from the bottom. Take out da axels and the crossmember lower the car on the jack then jack the car up from the rear tow hook loosen the mounts and wire harness jack the car up and look motor on the ground. Easy day

Just my 2 cents

Cherry picker rental is Cheap at any tool or equipment rental place. Just go get one, you'll need it to put the new motor in as well.

your going to have troubles any route you take using a hoist on dirt, just take em out the bottom like everybody is telling me to, and use tarps to keep em off dirt.
then just pull the tarp with the motor on it to wherever you need it

I did my swap on a gravel driveway with a rented cherry picker. It's a pain but very possible. If you get a strong pole or something you can chain the engine to it and lift it out with a guy on each side of the car. I got my old d16 out by jacking it up as high as i could and climbing into the bay behind it and then pushing/lifting it out. I put an old carpet on the bumper to stop it from getting scratched.

Yes you can pick it up. I'm not a big guy and I can pick up a D motor with no tranny, with another guy I can pick up the whole thing. Pull the head and it should be easy, I was carrying my block around last week to clean it and stuff and I dropped it on my knee and foot, no prob it didn't even break anything, they are very light.

Looks like back problems in your future, I used to be able to lift a lot when I was young, and now I'm paying for it. I still work on the cars but man does it hurt!

ok, do NOT use a floor jack on dirt.

it can shift and you will be killed.

if you have to do it on dirt, get a 3x3 piece of solid metal. like an old car floorpan or something. jack the car up on that, to allow some sort of stability against the dirt.

if i was you i would just jack the motor out of the car. you can do that by putting the jack under the motor first then jack it up just until it has a little pressure on it. the i would loosen the mounts and axles and stuff and just jack it out threw the top

you could take it out the top with two guys (i've done it,), but it would be WAY easier on you to take it out the bottom if you have the space. use the tarp

me and 3 of my buddies lifted the d15 out of my car with the tranny on, wasnt that hard at all when it came down to it -- i expected it to be worst.

but i would recommend a cherry picker for when you reinstall it at the least.
