Default Air Conditioning "Upgrade"

My question is: Has anyone "retrofitted" their A/C to use CFC-free refrigerant?

Up here in good ol' Canada, and probably places like cali, you cannot simply top-up the CFC rich Freon refrigerant in your A/C.

Instead, I have been told that I need to "upgrade" my A/C so that it uses the newer, evironmentaly friendly, CFC-free refrigerant.

If anyone has any knowledge of the process, please gimme a shout!!!

You cannot legally expel the current refrigerant that you have in your cooling system. But you can buy stuff at an auto parts store with good instructions and all the fittings to convert it yourself. It really is easy.

you need to make sure that you system is not leaking and if it is you need to repair the leaks.

134a is not as effective as r12 in terms of cooling performance.
