Default got a good question, i think

i just left honda-forums and those people are a real waste of time. i have been working on cars for years. mainly american muscle hot rods. i recently bought a 1990 crx si that is in pretty good shape, but i am thinking about do a swap for a little more power for not a lot of money. no one there would be kind enough to offer any advice to which motor would be the best bang for the buck. have been doing research for about three weeks now. just wanted to know if any one here wuld offer a little advice to a honda rookie or should i have stuck to the american muscle hot rods. any advice or info would be appreciated.

well lets see here.....

since you have an si, a d16z6, d15b vtec or zc motor would all drop right in with absolutely no modification besides maybe an ecu and obd0-obd1 wiring (if you wanna go obd1) all 3 of these motors have right around 120-130 hp and i think 100 ft pounds of torque, (dont remmeber the rpm they reach that power at). these motors can be put in to your current car for less than $1,000

if you wanna step it up a notch, theres always the ls (b18a, b18b) or the b16a, the ls would be a cheaper swap than the b16, just because ls motors are cheaper to come by. the ls (depending on the year) has around 140 hp and around 130 ft pounds of torque. the b16 on the other hand has 160 hp and like 110 ft pounds of torque. but with either of these motors, its gonna cost a good $1200-2000+, if you tried hard enough and had patience, you could do an ls swap for around $1500, the b16 though will be around $2000+. b series also needs different axles, ecu, shift linkage, mounts and wire harness

what they said above is all great info! but you could go with a simple ls (90-93 teg) and if it were to blow up there just as cheap to replace.... and down the road if you wanted more power you could slap a b16 head on it then have a ls vtec! good luck

well everyones going to tell you to go to http://hmotorsonline.com

my opinion if your short on cash, and you dont live in california or a state that borders it, then expletive it and find something local. shipping motors is sometimes as expensive as the motor itself, and you have no idea on the condition of it till like a week + later till it actually gets to your door.

but for specs, look there, a lot of sites will very in specs from other sites. since there is no EXACT hp and torque number for a specific motor because they are not all in the same condition. you could go buy a b16 and put out say 140 whp, and anothner guy buys the same exact motor and puts at 137 whp, get what im saying?

For the price to swap in any b series, you can swap a new D/ZC in and have some money left over for bolts ons or a mild build. You'll be making more torque too, and if you do blow it up, it's very easy and cheap to find a replacement.

imo ls would be the most bang for the buck just becasue of the torque you pick up... and there relativley cheap and easy to come by

but oppinions are like ******** other people will tell you b16, some gsr, or a sohc d16 a6, z6, zc, d15b (witch is the one i have in my car and imo having the z6 and a mini me build i think its the snapiest sohc) its all what you wanna do and how much work you wanna do and money you wanna spend...

there is a bunch of stuff on all these swaps on this site you just gota search to find them

Obviously a B would be ideal, but for cost and ease (he said he's new to Hondas) I really think a D is a better choice. I just built an A6/Y8 mini me with A1 pistons for about 300 total, including OBD1 conversion. The only thing I reused was my tranny, new block and new head. He could do the same but wouldn't even need a new block, not that that is a big cost. For another 700 in parts it would be easy to build a D that would smoke a stock B16 or LS, and it would be cheaper or around the same price, and it wouldn't involve changing mounts, shift linkage, etc. If he just did a head swap, it wouldn't even necessarily mean the motor would have to come out.

i am running a d16a6 right now. its not bad for a bone stock motor, but you have to realize that i am used to 437 hp out of a stroked mustang. dont want to kill myself but would like to feel the acceleration. not a lot of people around here are real big tuners. there are a few that are pretty quick but its not like the big cities up north and out west.
