Default 4 speed hatch....

I'm buying a new EF hatch this week...its a 4 speed. i was wondering, would it be worth it to slap on a 5 speed tranny? i was thinking one extra gear = better mpg?

discuss.

Ok for some reason I just dont understand. What honda tranny has a 4 spd? Is it really a manual transmission or is it an automatic as I believe it is? Im just not sure, so could someone please clarify?

ok well then. thnkx for that info, i wasnt sure.

Im assuming this is true, but Im not 100% b/c in other makes this IS true

4 spd vs 5 spd tranny in same car

5 spds are soemtimes classified as a 4spd with OD (overdrive)

there are different gear ratios for each tranny (assuming)
OR
ther gear ratios are the same until 4th, or 5th, in which case teh 5spd ahs an extra gear to drop the RPMs 400 lower or so, but possibly the 4 spd has a *longer* 4th, so it really doesnt need a 5th gear.

hey go try it and tell us, if you can get a cheap tranny, which shouldnt be hard...hey I have an SI tranny hehe.

The standard hatches came with 4-speed manuals. I dont know why they ever made them, the gearing sucks in em. Swapped mine for a 5-speed out of an si.

Supposedly the 4 speed is excellent for a boosted car, as it allows you to remain in gear and not have to build boost after you shift.

Not for the dragstrip though. That's why I got rid of mine.

Granted my old 88 std had a few engine problems but after I swapped in a 5 speed dx tranny I rarely shifted into 5th. The damn thing just didn't have enough power really. Si tranny maybe, dx hell no.

lol i love my 4speed and yes it is perfect for boost because you are constantly in a higher rpm( closer to building full boost) so you dont have lots of lag like the 5spd would , unless you drop from 5th to 2nd and floor it lol

the 4 speed is just a HF transmission with no 5th gear and has a DX final drive

for real..we dont have tq monster lowend power engines on this websites..you need the shorter gearing for our engines,,,epsecially boosted..if you've ever seen a dyno graph of a turbo honda you would see the powerband and realize that the longer geared tranny would suck for our engines..
