recommendation route to Mid-Ohio
Anyone can recommend a route that avoids hilly/mountainous area or big climb? I plan to go to NASA national in Sept. Also, what is the expected travel time?
first head south from california....go as far south as you can....you might come across some ice at some point....
ahhaa....
chad who is telling andrie to head to the south pole.....so he misses the national race....hahahah...
i40 is a good bet!!! then 75 north....have done this drive in under 32 hours...

I could probably hook some people up with some in car video from Mid-Ohio after the World Challenge race there. Granted its the video from a GT class car but its still a view of the track. I hear things are a tad different since they recently paved it. Some of curbs are different and the concrete patches are all gone.
1:43 is likely the time to shoot for with H4. should at least try to be better than the local ITA's best.
the toyos may be slower but the track is better and ita will drop some weight to run h4. plus more prep such as flywheel, etc.
don't remember the exact times but last summer moser ran something like a 1:44 or so in ita (edit 1:43.4 per http://www.cendiv-scca.org/03r...o.pdf).

Those were definately some nice times that Collin Botha had 2-3 weeks ago in a car he wasn't all that familiar with! Is he faster than John M? I thought John beat Collin at the 2004 "psuedo nationals"?

Scot,
i attended in 2004 as a spectator but don't know/remember who won or who John M is.
i think its an interesting question as to who of the local cen-div crowd attends from ita and will they fully prepare to HC rules? if some of the hot shoes from cendiv convert an ita to HC, i think you'll see faster times than the ita record.
i wouldn't be surprised if h4 beats out h3 or h2 for overall. certainly will be passing several of the slower cars in those classes.
heck, if it rains, h4 might beat h1.
back to the original question about routing, you might try some of the scca boards and look for somone that has made the tow to Nationals.
i really appreciate that several of you guys are going to make the trek out here!

The ITA track record is a 1:43.38 and I'll be surprised if H4 beats that at the Nationals.

I think Colin is the only one planning on running it at this time. To the best of my knowledge, no one is fully converting from IT to HC rules though. At least none of the top ITA guys.

For you the easiest route is to take 80 all the way and get of at 250 (exit 118). Take 250 to 71 south. Get off 71 at exit 165. take Castor rd. into Lexington. Take a left on Lexington-Steam Corners rd. and Mid Ohio is about 3 miles down the road.
Let me know when you guys are coming thru. I'll be heading down for the race as well.

Ben,
The Mid Ohio NASA track records were reset this year because NASA is now using the chicane leading into the keyhole turn. NASA had never ran this configuraton before but is now using it all year including the Championships in September.
Hopefully you can make it out to race w/ us again, Ben.

Sam

Hey Sam-
I watched the Mid-Ohio World Challenge races this weekend, track looks great. I didn't hear whether or not the GT or Touring guys set any new records from last year on the old pavement/asphalt. The curbs looked steep indeed
The plan is to do 2 Texas HC weekends (one next month at Hallett, then in August in TX) so I can meet the requirements to come to Nationals in September. There was talk over at the NASA boards that they might even waive the 5-required races to do Nationals depending on situation. Do you know anything about that?

Andrie,
You climb out of Salt Lake City, but it isn't really steep, just long. Of course, you stay in a pretty high elevation steppe and mountains through Wyoming, and you will notice that the tow vehicle is not running like it does at sea level! There aren't many fuel stops between SLC and Cheyenne, so watch the fuel gauge.

Yes, it was a great event - tons of track time (like all the Chin Motorsports events). Too bad it was so friggin' hot, but that's better than rain (which we had there all day Friday with BMW CCA).
The red and white striped curbing (at the apexes) is indeed steep. Just stay off it. The yellow curbing (at the trackouts, mostly) was nice and flat, very usable.
They've smoothed out some of the elevation changes - not drastically, but the pavement contour had been concave at certain points (entering the keyhole and entering madness), perhaps due to settling, and now the elevation changes are more uniform.
Still my favorite track...
