Aren't "crate motors" brand new from the manufacturer?

I know somewhere like I.B. uses the term, but incorrectly I think.

Topspeed,
Hmmm… your B20/V block setup is similar to ours. But your pushing way less Torque. What do you think? Im jus curious. Cause you already have a ported head as well as cams. The HP difference is normal but the torque is way off. I would expect your torque to be easily in the 150’s.

Hey:

I have no experience with any of the builders listed here, so what I am saying may not apply to any of them.

It is far better to go to somebody local or within a reasonable driving distance to buy something as expensive and complicated as an engine. There are many many many complicated processes and materials issues that go into building a motor. Ask your builder what his warranty is before you order, and get it in writing.

I have bought a couple of complete engines (domestic stuff, granted), and I have bought from big guys and little guys. I will never buy from anyone whose shop I can't get to in an afternoon again. Ever.

Other tips:

Just to warn you, most engine builders are terribly terribly slow as well.

The further they are away, the longer two weeks is.

There are good engine builders. There are young engine builders. There are no good, young, engine builders.

Double that for machinists.

Use a credit card for everything. NEVER pay by cash, check or money order. NEVER pay up front. NEVER pay a big deposit.

Learning these lessons has cost me big money. Hopefully they can do someone else some good.

Good Luck

Steve
