If you have a manual transmission, I'd suspect clutch failure. If you have an automatic, make sure you have your foot on the brake pedal firmly before shifting into gear or the electronic safety switch will not activate. If you still have the issue after presing the brake, you have a failure of the electronic safety switch or the gate latch on the shifter itself. You can override this by inserting your ignition key into the slot near the shifter and moving the shift lever into N Neutral position then use the key to start the car.
auto?
if so you have an interlock failure you can by pass it by placing key in slot next to trans and turning it.
Check your brake switch to see if it is properly working

are you saying that you cannot get it out of park ? or am i misunderstanding you.......
If you cannot get it out of park, make sure that the brake lites work when you press on the pedal, if not,,,,,,, blow the horn if it works the fuse is ok,, if not chk the fuse, underhood fuse box fuse # 30 20 amp
next step is to jump the brake switch, jump the white/yellow and green/white togerther if you can get it out of park then, you got a bad brake switch..........switch is located at brake pedal,, ..

Check if your brake lights work first if not, brake-light switch!!! If noone there to help you look. Move shifter to neutral and try to start the vehicle, if it starts. Brake light switch!!!
I never seen a neutral safety switch go bad yet, but it is possible.
