I have just taken off the bumper cover and support with the intention of getting rid of the rust on the support. I see all this black crap on the bottom of the car, just above the muffler, all teh way around. I was wondering if it's any sort of protective coating, or if it's just grime. (It comes off easily with lacquer thinner). Should I take it all off the body, or do I just leave it alone because I need it? thanks...

 

I have it on my car and have seen it on others.. same texture and color..

its a coating to help stop rust and corrosion. it is like a rubbery tar

 

my crix has it too. it also helps keep out annoying road noise, weather, and like they all say rust and corrosion. leave it! even my old 87 Si crx had it.

If you have any exposed area's where it has come off, might as well buy a can of the stuff and respray it.

Any local car shop should have it

look for "under car coating"
