Default Autoworks DOHC ZC Budget Boost Build

This is a customers car. It is an 89' HB, it was originally a DX, but was changed to MPFI. I sold him this ZC motor probably 2 years ago, he just recently got it put in, and wants it to be a little quicker for not a lot of $$...so here comes the budget boost.
On a sidenote, he also gave me the ok to do whatever I felt necessary for the Autoworks touch I love people/customers like that
On with the pics...
The car is in excellent condition

hmmm, "black" or white...decisions decisions

the bay, brand new header, coming off and will be for sale, the intake...I'm sure I'll end up using it somehow

This is his turbo on the left...

It's an IHI off of a probe, mounted to an HF mani with an adaptor plate. He will also be getting the same FMIC that is on my car...the same I put on every car.
This particular turbo is oil and water cooled. You can see the water lines wrapped under the turbo. He also decided to go ahead and go with the upgraded TB and Mani. So the Maxbore pieces willl be going to him (I'll just send his in later)
I'll get better turbo pics up this evening

that turbo will be too small for the ZC.

get a t3 from chrysler or a ford. the IHI will run outta steam up top.

I didn't choose the turbo. He furnished the turbo himself. I've already told him about the spool issue. HE isn;t looking for a $hitload of power, just something quicker, which this will do. It'll spool quick, but choke up top. He has a 4 spd. tranny; I think it'll do well for what he is looking to get.

It's about 11:30 PM and I''m just getting around to organizing my oil feed and starting to put it together. This kit will use the same sandwich plate as mine but I'm putting together my own oil feed/return kit.

Got some more work done today. Like I said earlier, I'll be doing a bit more than just the install, he said do whatever I felt needed so...
I yanked the AC lines, reservoirs, and rlocated the overflow tank (used an EG tank)

^^the stuff pulled off today

Also test fit the turbo...the HF mani hits the block just like my Greddy, so I'll be trimming that tomorrow. Also found that my water lines were too short...expletive

Got the piping done (80% anyway), the shaving of the manifold let the turbo sit perfectly.

Update today...finished the piping basically. I will be redoing a few pieces to straiten them and replacing the couplers (with Gates pieces)after everything else is done. I got this on with 0 modifications to the bumper, for the "stock" look.

I also ran the water lines to the mani, but didn't connect them since I will be doing a manifold swap on the car as well.

Wouldnt've been alot cheaper to get a SI or ZC transmission? I mean, over a 4 speed it would probably be alot quicker...

Thanks. He supplied the turbo, I will set it at 6psi. I am shooting for 150whp, I'm sure he'll be happy with that.

Thanks, I will do a price breakdown for the parts

Cheaper than what? The 4 speed came with the car, so that was the cheapest. He is looking for a 5spd. now, whci if he finds one before I finish the install, then I'll be putting it in as well. The car was a DX swapped over to MPFI. I sold him the motor probably 2 years ago, I didn't put it in. He just recently got it put in maybe 3 months ago. I've driven a DX with a D15, T25 and 4 speed that was surprisingly quick at 8psi.

Did you mean 250? Becuase that's not much more than my ZC is getting now.

Can you take a few pictures looking down at the manifold and on either side of the engine? If this ends up being in my budget I need to see what i'm going to have to modify in order to keep my a/c and p/s. So far it looks like it will work for me

He is shooting for 150 WHP (Wheel Horse-power). That's diff. from the factory ratings. They rate at the crank.

150 at the wheels is prolly adding something like 35 to 40 horsepower to the engine due to drivetrain drag.

No, I meant 150. That's about 40 more WHP than your probably making now. It is a turbo, all the owner will have to do to make more is turn the boost up, simple as that. This is NOT MY CAR. If it doesn' tfeel quick enough for him, then boost is an easy 30 sec. fix. Tq is what gets you moving

hmm, how much tq. do you think your car is making? My dyno at 6psi (on stock exhaust and cat)...

(made 171whp, 158tq 3 days later on new exhaust only)
this car will leave hopefully close to that. If he wants more, he can get more.
More power and tq will always take alot of work. Turboing is the easiest for me, and allows plenty of adjustment room. If your looking for easy then get a ZEX kit...but that's not much usable power.

If you've ever driven a car with a stock LS or b20 motor, you'll understand that a car doesn't have to have a huge peak number to be fun to drive. Torque is usually what makes the car feel powerful.

Many cars here make more peak hp than my 67 firebird, but not many can have the car stopped & idling, then punch it and roach the tires (w/o dumping the clutch). If torque wasn't fun, we'd all have 12k rpm cars running insane cams/heads that suck more than a d15 below 8k rpm.
