Help Diagnose Problem
What happened was i bought another prelude. The kid i bought it from told me he just changed the oil and filled the tank. Well take the car out get it into vtec a couple of times and the oil light comes on. Stop at a local gas station end up putting 3 1/2 quarts of oil in it. Driveing down the road the car stalls. Start it back up and theres a loud knocking sound from the left side of the engine i think from the 4th cylinder. I was wondering if anyone might know what could have happened. I think it couild be a main berring. Any suggestions i will be takeing the car apart on tuesday but was intrested if anyone might know what it could be.
Did you check the oil level? before you added 3 1/2 quarts? Because it could have been the oil pump actually going out.
What does it sound like at idle? And does it get louder as the engine revs higher?

I wouldnt start it if you dont have to. no sense in breaking more ****.
its prolly just a rod bearing. hopefully the rod didnt break as well and tear everything up.
what year/motor is it anyway?

It is a 93 and the sound is the same at idle I belive. Their is a great loss of power. It is a 93 with an h22. I don't think the oil pump would make that kind of noise. Could it be rod knock, and what would that be?
rod knock is when you're rod bearing gets destroyed, or is in the process of and the rod is loose on the crankshaft. The extra play can cause the piston to make contact with the valve and if its ran too long like that or at a high rpm the rod will break or shatter and tear up the cylinder walls or go through the block or anything else it feels like.
taking off the oil pan will tell you alot if you dont wan to pull the motor just yet.

I did take the oil pan off and find parts of a bearing. I only drove the car wheil it was knocking a little ways home a mile or two and then shut it off. Should i be safe just replaceing the rod and main bearings? From what i can see with the oil pan and the gertal off, the cylnder walls and the rods look fine. Im going to take the caps off and find out what bearing.

youll prolly have to have the crank reground and the rod replaced. there will most likely be fragments of metal all over in ur youre motor so youll want to make sure you get every last one cleaned out of there.
