Default ALL SEASON vs. SUMMER TIRES

What do you peeps like? I'm hearing good stuff about the all season tires but nothing about the summer tires. What is your take on this, surprised no one has made a thread about this topic....

Depends what you want. The all-season tires will be decent in most conditions. The summer tires, on the other hand, will be slightly better for grip in warm dry conditions, but they'll be horrible in winter.

The summer tires are not, however, "ultimate performance" tires. Something like Falken Azenis or BFG KDs will be better for dry grip. At least to me, this makes them slightly pointless. They have the downsides of summer tires without being really good for actual performance-oriented conditions like autocross or track days.

Well, from what I have researched, the Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2 are pretty good tires. Of course, you cannot drive with these tires in ice/snow. But besides that, they are great in a dry environment and they have good hydroplane resistance and wet traction.

I got All-seasons on my car, then bought an extra set of wheels with the summer tires, and saw a drastic improvement in the handling. Changing from the all-seasons just to the pilot exalto pe2 was a large improvement. There is definitely more grip to the summer tires. There is less wheel hop, extra grip in the corners and an equal amount of road noise. I live in Southern California and have absolutely no use for all-seasons.

I was just reading my manual and they say on the Si the tires will probably only last 10k miles (all seasons), so you'll probably get to sample new tires quite often.

I've got the all-seasons on my car and I'll let you know how they do this weekend at Willow Springs. (http://www.willowspringsraceway.com/home/home.asp for those not in SoCal)

When I burn them out, I'll probably put on a nice set of Toyos.

The Michelins will suck in the snow. So I will have snows come winter... probably get some 16 inch steelies since the selection of 17 inch snow tires is not very large and I don't want to ruin the stock rims. My Dad owns a tire store so once I find the best snows I'll let everyone know. Performance tire wise its a choice thing
