timing belt package question(searched)
ok. i have a 1992 honda civic cx with a b16 sir2. right now it is all stock. i was driving it yester day and it made a weird noise so i shut it off and coasted into a parking lot.I popped my hood and noticed that my timing belt was near snapping, so of course i towed it to my house to prevent snapping it and bending valves. I found out my tensioner failed and the belt rubbed on something.I decided it was smart just to order a OEM timing belt package and replace it all. So i bought one with oem belt, tensioner, and water pump. I finaly got it and now i need to put it in. I was wondering how to do this. i have no money to pay a mechanic to do it but I have a fair nowlege of my motor. I was wondering how to do this step by step and if it is posible to do it with the head on and the motor in the car. any help would be apreciated. i have a jack and stands but now engine hoist. plz help. this is my daily driver and i need it runnin again asap. plz help honda-tech.
dam i just did a whole write up and lost it when i went to upload some pics.
what exact problems are you having? get a $15 haynes manual and it will walk you through it.
get one of these

This will allow you to remove the bolt from the crankshaft pulley. This is the most difficult thing i have ever faced. Tool costs about $70 the number on it is 60100.
I really don't want to type it all up again so ask any specific questions.

Here is a great writup about changing your timing belt & water pump on a SOHC. A DOHC is mostly the same (secept for the second cam gear
). You would have found this in the "links" thread at the top of this forum if you searched hard enough:

you dont have to pull the motor just to change the timing belt, water pump, and tensioner. you will however need to support the motor from underneath with a jack and a 2x4 on top becuase you have to remove the driver side motor mount. i just did mine about a month ago. its really not difficult. just make sure you get everything lined up and the timing dead on when you are installing the timing belt.
and if you can get one of these, it will make the job MUCH easier. it locks the cam gears in place before you take off the old belt, that way you dont have to worry about them moving while installing the new belt.

i didnt say it was needed, just said it made the job easier.
and to correct you, the proper way of saying that would be "that tool is for amateurs".

also search for how to take the crank pulley bolt off..
that will be the biggest bitch of the job.
I use an air gun to loosen that bolt.
also while you are at it, check the condition of your other belts (alternator, a/c, power steering) this would be a good time to replace these too.

I dont wanna be an *** but i assure you that if you do not know what you are doing do not do this. If the timing is off it will hurt the motor. On a side note though I had much confidence and was able to do this. I also had air tools and I highly reccomend having them because they make the job a lot easier. That DIY pretty much sums up everything needed to know.
