shifting problem...on and off.
i just picked up an accord from a cousin and it would drive fine for awhile then it won't go into any gears at all for awhile. the only way to get it back in gear is shut off the engine and shift from there. what's causing this? cound it be just the shift linkages or do i need a new transmission? what i don't get is when it's fine....it's fine. only on ocasions and starting to happen more often now.
Sounds like the same intermitten issue I'm dealing with on my 91 LX. I changed the AT Control Unit seems to be working now. Mine did the same thing for a few months. Then one day it just wouldn't "reset".
If you have to turn the engine off in order to be able to shift again, then I would guess the problem is electrical somewhere in there.
I had never heard of such problem happening to a manual tranny like that.

That part sounds like the clutch is dragging. A few different things can cause the clutch to NOT completely release.
Pilot bearing going bad?
Clutch disk warped?
Parts broken from hub of clutch disk wedged in pressure plate?
Air in clutch hydraulic (if it's a hydraulic clutch)?
Clutch cable stretched (if it's a cable)?

Another thing is a sticky spline in the clutch hub. If it hangs up, the clutch disk continues to drag on the flywheel even tho the pressure plate has pulled away. Sometimes it sticks, sometimes it doesn't.
First, rule out external stuff. Clutch cable if it's got that.
Is it a hydraulic clutch? If so, have someone pump the pedal while you watch the throw-out lever. I think it should move about 12 or 13 mm back & forth. Then have them hold the pedal down for a while. The throw-out lever should stay, it shouldn't slowly move back over several minutes.
If you can rule out the external stuff, then you have to take the tranny out. At that point it's kinda silly to do anything other than replace the clutch, PP, pilot bearing, etc...

Sounds like the clutch master cylinder. I think that all turning the car off and on again is doing it aligning up the gears making it able to go in to gear. (The same reason that you can shift gear when the car is off but not when it is running)
