Default 01 prelude sucking too much gas!

can anyone tell me why my prelude is sucking so much gas? i live in new orleans and the gas price is at 3 dollars for premium gas and it is putting a hole in my pocket. is this normal for a prelude? its a 5 speed factory 01 prelude.

how much gas is it "sucking"?
has it just started using more?
what kind of MPG's are you getting? and what are you looking for?
how often are you in VTEC while driving?

these can ALL contribute from getting 20-30mpg, or larger difference.

my 99 5 speed gets 31mpg, if i drive like a granny shifting at 3.5kmax. You drive it slow and it will show your mpg some lovin.. I live in cali, its 3.33 $ here on average.. so quit your bitchin and buy a crx if you cant take it anymore.

p.s. Waaaahhhhh..

31 mpg?! How much of this is city/highway driving? I get around 25 mpg doing 85-90% highway. Not bad, but could be better, and I also shift around 3.5k and rarely hit vtec. 5 times per full tank or less.

Yea a general rule is to try and shift around 3k if your concerned with gas. Thats what I have been doin lately seems to be helping alittle bit. This gas is still beginning to hurt now though. In Philly area its around over $3 for premium.

well preludes have a small gas tank so that could be your deal. also vtec sucks a crap load of gas, so loose the metal foot. next time you fill up save your recipept and reset your mileage odometer and divide the miles by gallons, get your MPG, see if its normal

how big is the prelude gas tank???isnt it like 15.6 or something like that, thats a perdy big take for a 4 cylinder to me lol. i live in georgia and it just now hit 3 buck a gallon around here, but the bp by my house is still 2.99 a gallon for premium ....i get decent gas mileage but dont expect to get the same gas mileage as you could get from a civic....if it begins to hurt you pockets too bad sell it and get a 99-00 si thats what i am thinkin bout doin, should i or shouldn't i yall tell me. still have dohc vtec and the tank is like 11gallons and u get badass gas mileage as long as u can stay outta vtec.

shift early, don't use so much throttle, try cruising at a constant speed rather than constantly changing speed, don't use A/C, get smaller width tires (if you're running anything bigger than 205), hell i even refuse to keep a full tank of gas because thats just more weight in the car, i even just removed my sound deadening material (didn't make a difference in road noise IMO, and removed about 30 lbs but haven't officially weighed it yet), get a new intake filter or clean the one you have, get a better header (one that is truely circular tubing rather than the stock which is oval), replace O2 sensor, cut balance shaft belt (which i have also done with no problems after about 1 year/10k miles), change to synthetic oil, change trans fluid, CF hood/trunk/fenders/whatever as long as it still looks good, roll up your windows/sunroof when going down the freeway, lightweight 16" wheels, the list goes on... you can also check out the FAQ to read a post about lightening your prelude.

^^^ what an insightful answer... haha, just messin around.

OP, you never posted what kind of mileage you were getting!?!?!? (unless I missed it)

If you are gettin like 10-15... there is something wrong. If you are gettin around 20 or more and just came here to bitch... this was a waste of a topic.

If you have over 100k miles on it and you want more gas milage and you've been keeping the fuel system clean the next step is replacing your O2 sensors.

i was wondering..if the o2 is bad. does it bogs down your engine beside poor gas mileage?
