Since you in CA you'll more likely to get a fix ticket for that. Brake light are only allow to flash like that are when you are trying to warn the driver behind that you are goint to stop fast or slow down ahead.

I read something like that in traffic school.

You can get a rear brake flasher relay like they have for motorcycles from JCWhitney. However, I know it is legal to use on bike in WA but is not for autos. Probably the same in CA so just pump your brakes.

I've seen this a lot on newer GM vehicles... I'm starting to wonder if it isn't stock. I know that a while back, someone came out with a pressure sensitive brake light bulb assembly that functioned as a normal bulb under most conditions, but under panic braking, it flashed. It does seem to be a useful mod, at least in that it catches people's attention when you're braking... might try a relay wired into the circuit.

imo it's a bit more functional than that.... I don't know about you, but I've had some people ride my ***, and at least a couple of them went skidding off the side of the road when I had to brake like a reasonable human being. Yes, if I had been hit, it would have been their fault, but isn't half the battle in keeping from being in a wreck?

With all the ignant folks on the road with cell phones and coffee and laptops while they're driving, I'll take the extra warning to keep my back end from getting smashed. Every little bit helps...

and for the record, I've got a regular 3rd brake light on my car.

wow... that's brilliant.... Have you ever actually done any wiring before?

Personally, I'd recommend finding an older generation turn signal relay, the kind that are in a replaceable canister. You ought to be able to cut the wires before they get to the bulb, run them through the relay, then to the bulb. That will have them blinking at the rate set by the turn signal relay.

Depending on the relay you use, you ought to be able to control the blinking rate. An emergency flasher relay has a longer cycle. There's no real need to make it blink hyper fast, but a turn signal relay would probably be your best bet. Depending on what car this is going into, you might even be able to get the circuit contained in the lamp housing.

Another option would be to run some kind of a timer IC and make a full circuit of it, to bypass the relay after a certain amount of time. That would let it blink for a few cycles, then stay on solid. As I recall, that's the way most of the cars I've seen with this are like that.

As the 3rd brake light is neccessary (I'm 99.9% sure) on cars that come with it, I think that's illegal to put a light like that in...

Yeah I hear ya about the tail gating, I totalled out my friend's Si (which's ABS didn't work) when some guy was riding my *** on his cell phone, it was a 45 mph zone and it's KNOWN for strict *** cops, I was still doing 50 -- so this guy was doing 50 on my ***...saw a "deer" in the middle of the road about 200 ft ahead and had to JAM on my brakes FULL BLAST, and yanked the e-brake...he PLOWED into me, spent a night in the ER a lil sore, and collected full insurnace money (he got more than his Si was worth as it wasn't worth as much as they appraised it for, and I got an injury claim since i had to do an overnighter at the hospital)

It worked out well, he didn't want the car anyways (trying to sell it, but was beat to **** so badly he couldn't for a decent price, appraised higher than it was), so I sold it for him to an insurance company and made a lil money on the side - I'm sure that taught that lowsy expletive not to tail gate, I'm sure he thinks of that honda everytime he goes to do so...I think I did the right thing..better than hittin that deer, eh?

As far as laptops go...

Last time I got arrested I was talking with the cop and he was telling me as he was looking up some charge codes (like part #'s for charges) while driving that he believes that these'll cause accidents among police officers b/c they have to look down to use the laptop and it's while driving.. I told him he should take out that stock issued NYS police bracket and rig an aftermarket one higher up on the dash - he said it wasn't his car...

Anyways, yeah, I would keep that 3rd brake light in as I'm pretty sure it's illegal to not have it or not have it working properly if it was stock

Well, it wasn't so much taking it out, as much as making it flash.... Ideally, I'd like to see it flash maybe 2 or 3 or 4 times, then stay solid, or only flash during panic braking situations....

and in most cases, you don't come out ahead from getting into a wreck.

I've seen this on a lot of cars and crotch rockets. I think it's an awesome idea because I do a lot of driving on I-81 (during daylight and dark) and there is usually one good brake check every trip because of an accident ,and quite a few of them my brake lights blended in with the sun and nearly had an accident in my backside. But a brake light that would strobe for about 5 flashes then stay on would be great! I would feel a lot safer in those situations. I think new ford SUV's have it too.

I have done the 3rd brake flashing on my bro car. Just go to auto zone or any store that sale stroke light and just hook the stroke light power to the brake light power and the wire go to the stroke light hook it to your 3rd brake light. That how I did my bro car it came out good. Just get a stroke light so you could adjust it how fast to how slow.

I like these little mods, like my adjustable turn signal

I was thinking a small turn signal relay for the 1st phase then have a timer switch turn the relay off and apply constant power to the bulb or keep the relay closed and apply constant power that way. I guess there are a few possibilites to this. I'll draw out a few schematics and see what happens.

See that's not what i'm talking about. I'm designing a light that will flash a few times rapidly (probably two seconds) then go to steady on.
This isn't for rice at all it's safety. Your going to see more and more cars have a flashing 3rd brake light as time goes on.
And as for the one that got hit because the guy thought you were turning. Did you have ALL of the brake lights flashing or just the high mount?

That sounds like the old fart that wants spinners outlawed because he thought the truck was moving then he drove into cross-traffic. (I would like to see them outlawed though)

Its not a stupid idea. People naturally notice a flashing light more than a steady one. Thats why so many bikes have them.
