What would happen if you overfilled your manual tranny? Would the excess some how get burned off or dumped somewhere or would it stay in the tranny? Any side effects to having an overfilled tranny? I am not talking quarts more but like .5 quarts at most. Thanks

 

its almost impossible to over fill a tranny. the fill port is on the side... and its also the level check port... you just fill it till it starts to seep out and your good... if theres too much itll pour out, your fine.

what makes your think you overfilled your tranny?

 

It's very possible to overfill the tranny if going through the VSS. It's much easier than fiddling with a flex-funnel or whatever.

However, if filling from the proper fill hole, the tranny shouldn't be overfilled.

Unfortunately, I don't know what damage could be done by overfilling.

 

i need to flush and fill also. anyone know how many quarts go in a D series trany?

 

Manual? About 2 quarts. Just fill it until it starts to pour back out.

I dont think i overfilled my tranny i am just curious. I always fill it from the side hole not through the vss or anywhere else. And yes I fill it untill it starts to seep out. When i do it the car is jacked up so its slightly unlevel but it is not enough to cause any major difference.

I was really just asking out of curiosity.

thats what happened to me. you supposed to fill up to 1/2 inch from the fill hole itself.
now since my trans got over filled the whole underside of my car and exaust is covered with trans fluid. and it smells like **** too.

not sure how you managed to do this... not sure how you know what 1/2 inch is either.

agreed. I have a feeling his axle seals would have gone either way.

 

what i ment by half inch is if youy stick your pinky finger down the fill hole, the fluid should touch the top of your pinky finger.

 

Honda made the fill hole on the trans just like they do on transfer cases. You stick a funnel in it, start dumping fluid in, and when it starts pissing back out on to the ground you screw the plug back in. I'm really not sure how anybody could fk that one up, and I'm sure that's what honda was thinking when they designed it that way. Unfortunately for my faith in humanity, it sounds like somebody managed to do just that.

A fluid level that is too high can cause excess "whipping" of the oil (this is why certain performance engines have "windage" trays). Because of this, actually more oil can result in less lubrication because its whipped more and full of bubbles.

like a few others said, fill it from the side, when it starts to pour out, you're good to go. make sure the car is somewhat level. filling it from the side, you prettymuch can't over fill it. not sure what the hell you did gravel, you probably just needed axle seals anyway.

 

if you fill it up over its fine.. its not going to hurt anything. But do what the others said, its the easiest way to fill your fluid

if doing it properly, unless you are not on a level surface, you cannot overfill....

 

what if you dont fill it from the side and just fill it from the speed sensor? can you over fill that way cause some people say its easier to fill from the speed sensor.

you can fill it there if you don't have the right kind of funnel, but afterwards, I would open the fill hole and let any excess drain out.

basically what i made was a funnel with about 3.5 feet of hose attached to it. and ofcourse the hose goes in the gearbox fill hole. i used the clear hose.

 

take out the VSS. Open the fill plug. Get a hose and start filling through the VSS hole. Keep an eye on the filler hole. If fluid starts coming out, stop (duuuhhhh). That's what I did last night.

 

yeah its easier to fill from up top, but all you need is a piece of hose on the end of a funnel and do it from the side, on a level surface, and you CANT overfill. just do that.

tranny fluid is a bitch to fill; however idiot proof

fill till it spills

i recommend lucas oil stabil in royal purple
or motul if u feel like going to the trouble
