NHRA XPLOD SPORT COMPACT RACING SERIES GEARING UP FOR DRAG RACING AT OLD BRIDGE TOWNSHIP RACEWAY PARK

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. – The NHRA Xplod Sport Compact Racing Series is getting set for the upcoming sixth annual Nitto NHRA Sport Compact Springnationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park on May 6-7.

For six straight years competitors of the NHRA Xplod Sport Compact Racing Series have competed at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. Fans attending the Nitto NHRA Sport Compact Springnationals may see records fall, and will definitely see the best side by side sport compact racing in the world on the track.

Local racer, Gary Gardella who is from Jackson, N.J, looks to keep family and friends happy with a winning weekend. “I’m looking forward to the race. This is my favorite track,” said Gardella. “I’ve been racing at Englishtown since I was about seventeen or eighteen years old.”

Gardella continues, “The class is growing and we may have the largest field we’ve ever had. There are going to be more cars coming into the Pro FWD class toward mid-season, or even possibly even Englishtown.”

The Nitto NHRA Sport Compact Springnationals will be the third race for the 11-race $2.5 million NHRA Xplōd Sport Compact Racing Series. There will be more than $27,000 in purse at stake for the racers in each of the five championship categories (Pro RWD, Pro FWD, Modified, Hot Rod and Honda Tuning All Motor), and it is the third race for the Eastern Regional NHRA Sportsman Championship.

As for the rivalry brewing in the Pro FWD class between the domestics and the imports Gardella said, “I have a love for all cars. Ed (Bergenholtz) is trying to make it more of a rivalry for all of us. We are all friends, but on the track it’s all about the racing. For me it’s about Gardella Racing versus Bergenholtz Racing.”

The Nitto NHRA Sport Compact Springnationals will also be the third competition for the race toward earning a spot in the Pro RWD field at the NHRA Sport Compact Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka (Kan.) and Indianapolis Raceway Park. The top ten Pro RWD drivers in the Sport Compact Series will be eligible to compete at these two events that are held in conjunction with the POWERade Series.

Following a very successful 2005 season, which saw increases in both participation by drivers and fans, the Xplōd series is looking to continue that growth in 2006. There will be new drivers to see on the track and new activities to view and participate in off the track or in the pits, which will provide fans with the opportunity to have a full day of fun.

While the quickest side by side sport compact racing in the world is happening on the track, fans will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities in the pit and the entertainment area. The NHRA Xplōd Stylefest will provide fans with the chance to view the NHRA Tuner Car Show, which offers the best sport compact show cars, Q Power NHRA Dyno Challenge, NHRA Sound Challenge presented by Sony Xplōd, the Modified Magazine Bikini Xhibition, concerts by today’s hottest artists and other extreme sports exhibitions.
