spun bearing = more of a rattle
broke rod = knock
and if there is mettal shavings in there they will probaly be stuck in your oil pickup check the screen

1st stage = light, light ticking / scratching. Sounds like the timing belt is rubbing
2nd = noise has gotten louder
3rd = You hear a knock at a certain RPM, not below it
4th = constant knocking, makes you sad

Nah not yet. My friend has my jackstands and i haven't ask if he was done with them yet. Im going over there in about an hour to get em. Once i do that im draining the oil, check for shavings then dropping it.

Sometimes if its a spun bearing , rod knock or some kind of piston slap you can kill each cylinder one at a time by pulling the spark plug wire and it takes the load off that cylinder and the noise will go away this is how I figgure out which cylinder was the problem on a car I was working on at work

Pull it from the valvecover or from teh dizzy cap?

Yeah I would pull it from the valve cover its alot safer, and dont lean on the car becuase if you have a leaking spark plug wire it will jump through you becuase your grounded to the fender or core support .

pulled oil pan and ran magnet thru drained oil. Found like grits of sand sized metal shavings. Guess it means i did spin one. When i rotate the crank manually is there anything else i can try to look for to make sure thats it? Or is it i gota dissassemble to know for sure.
update!!!!!! check this out. I think i found my problem and i dont think its anything internal.
I pulled hte motor out and seperated the tranny from it. I got a new clutch so i started taking the old one out. When i went loosen the flywheel i noticed it was sticking out a bit, not alot but noticable that you can tell that the bolt was loose.
Before I loosened it any further i kind of gave it a lil shake and noticed the flywheel was loose and all the bolts but 1 jiggled. I then by hand loosened every bolt except the one that didnt jiggle.
This leads me to believe that the noise i was hearing was a loose flywheel. Its not normal to be able to loosen the flywheel bolts by hand is it? If that is the case then i guess ill save the money for bearings and just get a lightened flywheel to replace the OEM one.
ok now im just rambling, but the question is what is the possiblity that was the problem? i dont want to put the motor back in and then realize it wasnt it. I also dont want to tear the block apart only to find that nothing was wrong internally.
Thanks in advanced,
Mondo
*ps* might see this same post on different forums lol damn im happy if its just flywheel.
