Default 4000rpm limit?!?!

I have a 2002 Accord EX MT SOHC 2.4L I-4 VTEC. My car is fine at first and I can rev up to the redline. But after about 10 minutes of driving I can no longer rev past 4000RPM. So, when I try and downshift, lets say to pass a slower car, I can't downshift to a lower gear unless it is less than 4000RPM. When I hit 4000RPM the car seems to die and lose power as if I hit the rev limitor which is normally at 7200RPM. Once it goes back below the 4000RPMs I regain power. The engine has 70,000 Miles. Any clue as to why this is???

Your check engine light must be on. You need to find what code it has stored first.

OK so I guess I would just have to take it into a shop and have them diagnos the ecu. Yeah the check engine light is always on because I have a hollowed cat and it always thinkgs the air to fuel ratio is bad. Thank you for the reply!

Does your speedometer work? If not its probably your vehicle speed sensor which also controls the VTEC. The VTEC wont come on if the vehicle doesn't read the speed sensor or the VTEC sensor on the engine. You should really just have the engine code read to find out the problem before spending alot of money. Most parts stores like advanced, and autozone will check it for free.

Wait a minute here....

If you have a 2002, you have a 2.3L, not the 2.4L found in 2003+. And your rev limiter would kick in at about 6500 rpms. Anyway.

Like MooGoCow3 said, get the codes pulled.
