I was impressed to hear the announcers mention that the Prototypes this past weekend were doing 150mph in the esses! Of course, they have a little additional downforce.
This was the last place I was expecting to see a pass, but that is what happened with the leaders, with about 3 laps to go. I believe the leader was getting low on fuel...

Indicated speed has little meaning with speedo error, tire sizes, etc... What is important is that it should be flat out, no lift, in any HC car including H1.

IIRC, its around 117 in the CRX. I am pretty sure that the speed drops off as you climb the hill though. Either way, on any good lap, its flat out from mid-corner Left Hook (3rd gear) until you lift (5th gear) to brake for South Bend in an ITA/H4 CRX.
And I'd bet money Toyos are the faster tire up through there. The Hoosiers are faster in the slow stuff but the Toyos have had less rolling resistance in the past (not sure about the 06s).
Unless there is a wall of wind resistance over the mid 120s, I don't know why an H1 car wouldn't be in the 130 mph range.

In the $E-R: enter ~115, exit ~112, as Phatty says you lose a little mph through there. Hey the car IS sliding after all. Brake to ~90 for south bend.

FWIW, it was actually closer to 160 in the #23 Crawford/Porsche on our fastest lap in the dry (46.2). In the full wet Saturday race top speed in the esses was still about 154.

Dear god. I would like to do that exactly once. Then I would come into the pits.
I'm pegged in 5th gear in my car, indicated 115-116, and that feels pretty quick.

don't know how fast in the SE-R since the speedo doesn't work, somewhere in the upper rev ranges of 4th gear (probably 115 to 120 mph like matt said)
ps. I caught a lot of people there in the sprint races in the rain and the enduro in the dry back in february....a LOT of people lift there, people who tell you they are flat out (miatas, SPEC E-30s etc. etc .........kind of reminds me of the KINK at CMP ;-), everyone says they are flat out.......but as soon as you are behind them, its easy to tell who lifts and who doesn't ;-)
pss.. uphill esses at VIR is my favorite section of track i have ever driven on

Due to the extra weight of a full interior car with working A/C and stereo, I usually do a 1-2 second confidence part-throttle lift at turn-in. Hey, I have to (sometimes) drive this thing to work on Monday!

I want to meet some of those people. If I don't give a slight lift upon entering the first left, I'm pretty sure the car would go bye-bye

H1 car, you Must lift (maybe not if Boris is driving an 2.0L S2k). A fast and heavy H2 car can be sketchy..
Jason, the start of the enduro in Feb was quite scary. They grouped the start by class. So we had rookies, with faster cars starting the the front, with some really fast guys in slower cars starting further back. ( we qualified 20th on raw time, but had to start 30th).
By the time we reached the esses, the "fast cars, slow guys" decide to lift, that will make you pucker when all the "no lift" miata and us catch them either on the entry or by the 2nd turn with 20mph..

130mph in H2 = Big "If". Jason admits he isn't certain, so don't take it as fact. Face it, it is going to take a radar gun to confirm anyone's claims. I'm way too busy to look down, my speedometer's accuracy is off with 225/50s anyway.
I shift my H2 w/ a 4.9 FD into 5th right at the bridge and can mat it all the way to the braking zone for #10 (got it on in-car vid). The exit of #9 is too wide when I do this and it hurts the entry into #10, so I think a little breather before #9 makes for a faster exit of #10, and thus a better lap. I'm guessing 119 - 121 before braking for #10. Lap time = 2:15.2 (Oh...and Chad doesn't brake for #10
).
Chad, if you can do an honest 130 - 135 in the uphill esses and 145 - 150 down both straights, your lap times should be about 2:05. Last time I checked... 'ole blue ain't there.
I saw the Motec map for Butch Lietzinger's Pontiac/Crawford last weekend. 157 in dry uphill esses, 178 down the back stretch and 176 down the front. Not sure if that was a 10/10ths lap or not...but I did this
when I saw his speed through the esses!

Actually, I've been tempted to do this, but just can't bring myself to do so. Every and I do mean everytime I go through south bend, I swear I could have gone through there faster. I'm not convinced that one can't go through there without braking, but I doubt I'll be the one to try.

I'll bet that not braking for South bend (#10) would knock several seconds off your lap time. The problem is, T&S would not score that lap because you re-entered the track in front of the south paddock...and skipped #11 and Oak Tree
