Default Can someone explain to me progressive style springs?

Whats up guys? I'm lookin at springs for a 06 civic (tein vs comptech). When i called comptech to get the spring rates, they told me their springs were progressive and that the front were 140 to 300 and the rears were 150 to 260. Were as when i looked at teins rates, there was just one set number. Which is better, and why? Please explain to me how these springs are built different, etc. Thanks

A progressive springs rate changes as the it is compressed. On a progressive rate spring, you will see some of the coils are more tightly wound together than others. As the spring compresses, the coils that are close together will start to bind up. When they bind, you are left with much shorter length of wire w/ fewer coils. This becomes a much stiffer spring. The benefits of a progressive rate spring is that it has a softer ride quality, but still becomes much stiffer during hard cornering where stiffness is required.

A linear rate spring will have the coils the same distance apart through the entire length of the spring (except the very ends). This gives you the same spring rate through the entire stroke of the suspension. This usually means they are much stiffer, and make the ride more harsh. The benefits of a linear rate is that you get more predictable handling...

Here are some visuals.

94eg! has explaind everything properly.

Notice the difference between the Teins and Comptech

Tein Standardized/linear. One Spring Rate.

Comptech PRogressive. A Range of Rates because of the difference in space of coils top to bottom.

so which one in your guys' opinion would be a better spring choice and why? I'm leaning towards the comptechs based on what i've heard. They sound like a good ride, but also have the ability to take corners and handle nicely when needed.

If you're looking for street driving, the progressives are a good choice. That's really what they were designed for; soak up bumps on initial travel, but still offer some stiffness when needed.

thats kinda what i figured. It will drop it enough to take out the gap...ride pretty close to stock...but also have that stiffness if i wanna take a tight turn.
