Default 96' EK Hatch w/ B18C5 - Tranny Fluid

I've recently acquired a beautiful 96' ek w/ an JDM IT-R motor and lsd, and find myself loving every second of it. This week I'm changing my oil and I am also going to put some Redline tranny fluid in and was wondering what weight i should use (80-90?) as well as how many quarts I'll need. I plan on picking up 5 bottles of mobil 1 5w-30 fully synthetic, that is unless someone has another great oil for this engine. Help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Drew

I say stick with OEM Honda Manual Tranny fluid...but that's me. Mobil 1 is good for engine oil. 8)

I run Mobil1 5w30 synthetic in my engine and regular motor oil in my trans. (They dont last me that long I have had 4? I think in the last 3 yrs)

the reason why ur trannies dont last that long is because you are putting regular oil in there. You need at least 80w in there.

So 80w-90? I've only heard good things about redline on the R's tranny, does anyone run it on here, tell me what you think.

What statement is this based on? Different trannies take different weights.

The WRX takes a 75w90 gear lube as tranny fluid. Honda MTF is definatly NOT a heavy weight oil.

I'm runing AMSOIL synthetic synchromesh transmission fluid in the Si which is a direct replacement for Honda MFT and it is a 5w30 transmission fluid.

I won;t run redline products in a tranny, now Quaife is advising against it also.

5w30 or symchromesh........all the Honda tranny needs.

I use to use Redline MTF in my EM1 and was not happy with the product. At first it felt great, but after a short time the shifts just weren't as smooth as they should have been. So, I am now using Motul 10w30 gear oil...it's great so far and the shifts are very smooth.

As for motor oil, Mobil1 is fine. I used to use that, but now I use Motul 5w30...but like I said, nothing wrong with Mobil1

why do you think they make Honda MTF? For your Honda, of course. Put that in and forget all your worries.

No need for another one of these threads (read my sig)

the Honda MTF didn't come out till 1997, read the oil for what is suggested for your tranny in the owners manual

To bad you can't get SF/SG anymore.

I am suprised to hear such negative things on Red-Line, but since I'm still a noob im going to give the Motul 10w-30 a try i believe. I am also wondering how many quarts I will need to fill it up. My only problem is when i aggresively shift from 2nd to third, sometimes , and only sometimes i grab a touch of the 3rd gear. 5th gear at basically any rpm/mph will have a slight grind unless that is I either shift very slow, or I double clutch from 4th to 5th, so let me know people what you think.

Thanks

Actually untill the last yr, Honda put in 5w30 motor oil in there trany's. Its just been recently replaced with MTF. Check out your shop manual it will say use such and such motor oil based on your climate.

But to break down my trans proplems
1st - Hell if I know, went bye bye one day with one hell of an explosion. A pin went out in the differental and the casing litterly exploded.

2nd - Oil seal went out on it, lost the oil and a bearing started to make noise.

3rd - Current one, The syncro's arent the best was like that when I bought it but it gets me around town its just down shifting isent the smoothest.

4th - Going to rebuild anther one with my gears from my del sol si trans and an lsd when I get around to it. Just dont have the cash right now.

Royal Purple, are you talking about for the tranny fluid or engine oil, I wasn't sure if RP made transmission fluid.

royal purple is the ONLY oil that you can put in your engine that youll able to FEEL the difference. they also make 75w-90 tranny fluid which you should also use. its all i ever use. its worth the extra dollar per quart.

People are giving me so many different suggestions, which transmission and fluid should I finally go w/, some say motor oil only, others say a heavier weight tranny fluid.

whatever you due don't use 80-90 its to thick to carry around all the bearing. it won't lubricate properly.
