Default Need a quick answer - How to *know* if HF vs. DX

About to go drive 2 hrs to go pick up what was supposed to an 88 CRX HF... However, Carfax calls it a DX according to the VIN I got from the owner... Also scary is mileage inconsistency (owner says 130k, carfax had inconsistent readings (maybe an odo replacement or two, not sure) )...

So the vin says it's a DX... provided the car wasn't swapped (will ask), bot the DX and HF are 1.5L... Where does it say D15B6 (HF) or D15B2 (DX) on the engines? How should I approach the possible odo changes?

Help!

(Had a CRX for a month before, fixed it up and sold it). Really just looking for a reliable daily driver (straight frame, good internals), this one just had a new clutch put in and a basic tune up, and the price is decent (~1100), minimal rust (quarter size).

Can you see the engine block reading when the engine is installed if I'm trying to describe where over the phone? Also I guess his cluster needs to start redline at 5k... will ask
Was going up during the day, but check out this ODO report from carfax...

What the hell??? =\

Should I just suck it up if the frame is straight, Engine is good, tranny is good, and brakes are okay? $1100... I don't mind a DX... kind of liked the idea of an HF for mpg, though the DX was 'okay' at 92, the 62hp of the HF might bug me... but probably not... argh.

Thoughts?

Make up your mind. DX or HF. Neither are going to give you a lot of performance without an engine swap.

Nobody here is going to make this descion for you.

Yeah,,thats weird with the odometer ,seems like alot of shady stuff happend with that car..

You can see the engine code with it in the car,,but it most likely is covered with grease,,so he'll have to clean it off to read it..Another way is hf says "hf" on the rear of the car,,DX says nothing....And yeah hf has the low redline cluster of about 5000revs,,,,,And under the hood if it is a stock hf motor it shouldnot have 16 valve written on the valve cover like the dx and si models..Its obviously a dx though because you ran the vin and found out..so expect to look at a dx when you get there.

I don't think I'm going to go with that much odo play... I mean, one change fine, like a cluster swap, but WTF...

=\

Default Need a quick answer?

I have both dx and hf my hf sticker wore out so its not there anymore, I figured the easy way to tell is when I swapped the doors, dx's and some si's have the seat belts on the doors hf only comes with the seat belts on the door pillar, I tried but thers no way of swappin the seat belts in a dx thers no bolts welded in the mounting holes so thers no way of faking that. . . . Unless when you put them in they'll be hella flimsy plus its too much damn work

Not true 88-89 had seat belts bolted to the pillar 90-91 had them on the doors

you can see the engine code, its to the left of the header... but it might be covered up with dirt so you might have to wipe it off to see it clearly... and dx > hf...

True and in 1989 only the HF had Pillar mounted seat belts; all others from then on are door mount. ALSO, All 88 and the 89 HF seats are the same mounting while 89+ are another group

HF>DX if you plan to swap... You'll already be MPFI rather than crappy DPFI (Requires more wiring work)

Hmm, where do I know engine from????

Man for the love of god, why didn't any of you give him the easiest answer of all?

If it say PGM-FI on the intake manifold it's an HF. If not, DX.
End of story.

Who cares if the odometer's real, the mileage is high enough that the engine could go at anytime, so whats it matter? And a new engine = dirt cheap. I'm sure you could find someone on here giving away an HF or DX engine for free.

To all you guys goin on n on about him swapping engines into it, he doesn't plan to. He said he only wants a daily driver.

OP: chaulk that ****, and buy it if it's a decent body

Yeah, didn't want to swap...

Talked to the guy this morning, he says 198k on it, which makes sense compared to carfax... but I'm not driving two hours with my GF to get an 'okay deal' crx. Also didn't get the upclose rust pics, just description, which might not be accurate.

I'll let him sell it locally... and keep my eye out otherwise. *sigh*

Meh, I'll wait for something closer so I can inspect it without feeling obligated to buy it (it's a trip and would have to bring the gf), and I wouldn't mind getting a stock, well maintained car.

That is kind of misleading because the DX does say PGM-FI
on it also..

A DX engine with DPFI will look like this:

MPFI will look like this:

engine number in area indicated..

Looking at something local for $1700 tomorrow... It has a pretty well done (according to pics) body kit on (Buddy Club rear and sides, R33 Omega front), Optima yellow top, and pacesetter Monza exhaust, and rebuilt engine, 200k on the chassis, supposedly well maintained, I will go see.
