what's wrong with this cage...
Hey guys, posting under a friend's name. I recently had this cage put into my car by a friend. doesn't matter what the details are really, but this is what I ended up with... not exactly what I wanted. Basically I need someone to help point out design flaws in it.

the overall fit of the cage looks pretty crappy too. There looks to be 1 to 2 inch gaps in some places, that is not good.
the front hoop, looks ok. but that rear section, looks like some JDM king had it

Thanks. Supposedly, the cage was built to fit into nasa and scca rulings even though i'll prob never drive it there. The car is primarilly a drift car. I wasn't asking for anything that serious in the back.

Seriously....that cage is a mess. What's the deal with the sheet metal going from the tubing down to the floor pan?
[b]You know what, i've got it, it's a destruction derby car, right?

problems
1. no harness bar
2. no diagnol in the main hoop
3. the rear stays attach in a not so important area. (best place is at or near the rear suspension point pick ups)
4. the main hoop just doesn't fit good, more gap then i like
5. the front down tubes (the ones going down the windsheild) are too far inside the car for my liking. It can and will get in your feild of vision. It is completly possible for those bars to be right up against the pilliar.
6. no dash bar
7. no door bar
8. the plates on the main hoop and the front pilliar bars appear to just be welded to the floor. Welding and attaching them to the fram rail and more area is a great idea.

The harness bar/diag bar/ door bars weren't in at the time of those pics. The dash bar.... I told him not to worry about because most cages that don't go through the dash don't have one. keep in mind this is mostly for drifting and doens't require that. the fitment stuff was to be expected as well. I'm not too concerned with that. Mostly it's the mess that's in the rear. I mean this car will never be classed well in road racing being an AE86 chassis corolla so no real plans for that. Thanks for the comments.

maybe jsut explain to this "cage builder" that theres alot more to it than jsut welding random piping all over the place, id imagine theres more qualifiaction involved than jsut having a welder and some pipe lying around
Yeah, I think he understands that. He's trying to start up a business and I doubt anyone on here will go to him anyways just due to the type of work he normally does. Most of it has been drag cars and that kind of stuff. people seem to like his personal drag setup.

Wow!!!
I hope that was free! Yikes...
If you want to do it cheap, just cut out that mess of crap behind the main hoop. Just leave the rear braces, and leave the bar between the shock towers. Cut out the others...
That should take about 2 hours to do it nicely!

That jungle gym thing would collapse if the car were in any sort of serious impact
Just because its only for drifting doesnt mean you need to be unsafe, especially when you're putting $$ into a cage.
Just tell him to make it look like this -

See I thought that was exactly what it means. Its not JDM if its not unsafe.
Seriously though, that is one of the worst cage designs I've ever seen. The main hoop and front arms aren't too bad, but I'd definitely at least have the rear section re-done. Something along the lines of what RJ posted would be ideal, easy, and above all safe.

the rear looks like it ties into subframe points am i wrong there? imo its not as horrid as people here are saying big issue for me though is that the tubes dont meet at the same points thats the first thing i would change along with ditching the rear x and the lower braces and make the lower braces intersect with the other 2 bars on that lower bar reinforcement thing. add in some door bars a dash bar and foot protection and id think its a safe cage. now if that lower section does not tie into subframe points cut it all out.

drift cars have a greater chance of crashing IMO

Yeah, he said that it ties in the frame rails. 86 has straight axle in the rear, so there is no subframe. The point I was making with it being a drift car is that FD doesn't require the bar going under the dash to tie in the lower portion of the front bars. Safety is a key issue. The biggest in point in having a roll cage imo. Thanks again for input guys.
