Default Exhaust puffs black

Running a 97 GSR engine, I/H/E, when I get into my high RPM's (6-7000) I puff a little bit of black smoke. Its not constant and its not blue, its black. So I'm pretty sure I'm not burning oil or have gas in my oil. I think I'm running rich, but without a VTEC controller, is there any way to remedy this? Or am I missing the problem?

p.s. I just replaced plugs and wires.

sounds like you are running rich, check your ignition timing and set back to stock and make sure you didn't advance the timing

Do a compression or leak-down test to see if you're having internal problems. Sounds like you might be getting some blowby, but that happens to a lot of cars. Black smoke is oil I think, try to see if you are losing compression through the rings?? There really isn't a way to lean your car out mechanically, except lowering the fuel pressure. VTEC controller is your best bet(cheapest) in fuel control.

Can you elaborate, I assume a mechanic can do the leak down test? What type of internal problems might be the soource? I thought blue tinted smoke was oil, and black smoke was unburnt gas? Its like a puff of black powder is coming out (If you can imagine that) for about two to three seconds when I'm in my high RMP's. I get clean exhaust the rest of the time, no white, no blue, no black smoke.

Sorry if I sound like an idiot, but I'm a computer geek who loves my teg, just trying to care the best for her.
