I have a lot of vibration coming through the steering wheel of my car. It isn't very noticable till you reach about 50. After 80 it is quite annoying. When I hit the brakes the car doesn't hard to either side so I doubt it is my front brakes. Also the car doesn't pull heavy to one side or the other. But to drive straight you have to hold the wheel slightly turned. When I installed slightly stiffer springs the vibration went down. I had the wheels rebalanced as well but that didn't help.

I thought I would go and get a realignment to see if that would correct it, but before I do, I was wondering if there are any steps I can take first to find out what the problem is and how to remedy it?

I suggest checking out allignemnt, tires being balanced, tire pressure.. and hey even rotors, before you worry about wheel bearing and joints... always look at the easiest things.....

My guess is going to be one of the axles....Had the same problem and it turned out to be my driver side axle

when I back out quicly from my driveway at an angle, my left front end makes a strange fluttery sound/motion? It does a floppy oscilation (sp.?) thing. I'm not sure if this helps.

 

my tires were getting worn real quick and felt like wheel wanted to go this way then that way.. and had a shake..

it turned out to be the bushings on the lower control arm ... completely shot.. gave like a half inch on bothsides

 

my bet is on a tire being out of balance.

How long since you rotated them? Im guessing more than 15k miles.

 

rotate your rear tires to the front and drive to check if it goes away. if not, check suspension play by lifting the car and visually checking all the bushings, ball joints and then use a pry bar to load and unload the joints and bushing locations. if you find slop and flop, replace that item on both sides. next, use your hands and tug and yank at the axles, if they flop around excessively, you need to replace them. if you have time and a little money, replace all the bushings in the front and the ball joints as well. it is not expensive to replace the bushings and ball joints if you do it yourself. it can be accomplished over a weekend. once you replace everything (i did on my civic), the car will feel like its brand new and very solid.

 

does any know were I would find a stiffer bushing kit for my civic 1996 hatch????

 

Alignment. My car was doing the same thing. 4 days later I had steel showing all the way around on my front tires.

those bushing are expensive. Do you need a press to put them in?
