Default free 93 accord... should i take it?

my cousin is giving away a 93 accord lx and i may be picking it up. one major problem is with the tranny. it grinds going into gears - so that i have to replace. my question is how much would that run me? the work itself i can do. just want to know how much a tranny for one of these cost and is it worth doing it? another question... whats the horsepower/ torques rating of this machine? quarter mile time? you probably can't tell but i'm fron the integra forum - until it got stolen! so i'll be hear for awhile unless i get something diffrent.

Well i think you should take it. Throw in an H22A it will be a quick car if not turbo'ing the F. As for the tranny you can prob find a used onefor pretty cheap. If not just upgrade to an h22 or h23 tranny since they are interchangeable. The LX was rated at 125hp i dunno bout torque figures though. Quarter stock is 17 seconds or so but you can inch into the 16s if you launch it hardcore.

well, i'm not worried about performance for this car so i won't be putting a prelude motor in it. transmission will be stock also. whats considered cheap for a used tranny? forgot to mention it's a manual.

I kinda noticed it was a manual when you said it "grinds" when it goes into gears. I saw one for like 240 or so something which is decent i would say i think he had like 80000 miles on it or something around there. You can try junkyard searching might be able to pull one out for cheap. You try just changing out the MTF first and stuff before? How bad is the grinding it might be fixable.

while the h series trans will give you a boost in accelleration, they will cause your car to suck gas like there is no tomorrow due to their lower gearing.....

pull your trans out and take it to a shop and let them rebuild it....that will save you a lot of cash and you will get a good trans in return... grinding usually means your syncros are bad........

how much is a rebuilt? i was under the impression that getting a salvaged tranny would be the cheapest.

Used trannies are generally cheaper than rebuilt ones. Personally Id prefer buying a used one with low miles since there better....

a rebuild on a manual should not cost more than $800...if you take the trans out yourself...

Now the question is: How is the rest of the car? have you checked verything else out? are there any major maint items due like t-belt, brakes, tires, etc...

if you can do all the work yourself, and get a used tranny for 200-300 bucks, thats not bad since you paid nothing for the car.

a 93 accord values from 1,200 to 2,500 depending on condition, but its pretty reliable, so if i was you i would get it, 300 bucks for a reliable DD is not bad at all

$100-300 for a used tranny online.

Are you sure the tranny is bad? I've seen people driving around on totally fucked clutches that thought that it was broke synchro's.

Also, maybe price a manual tranny rebuilt kit. It's pretty much just pulling the bad gears off of a shaft, and slipping the new ones on.

Don't replace the tranny!!

Replace the gear oil first with some good quality synthetic...like Redline MTL.

Inspect the master clutch cylinder for proper fluid level too.

I bet between the fresh gear oil and attentive shifting, you won't have to replace or rebuild anything.

I had the same model car with the same problem and it was the syncro's. I never fixed the problem so I don't know how much that would cost you, but I'm pretty sure you don't need a whole new tranny. I would defenitily take the car espically if it is free. Good Luck

perfect for an h22 swap! the car is already obd1, and you will have yourself a safe, practical, reliable, fast, decent-looking daily driver.

i say take it, even if you end up spending around 1000 for timing belt, clutch, etc you'll have very reliable car with all the main stuff taken care of, providing the interior was well kept.

okay i picked up the car now. the problem is it would drive fine for a moment then won't go into any gear the next. it can be forced very hard in sometime but not all the time. the engine would have to be shut down first. it does seen to be a tranny issue maybe shift linkages? i might take it in to have it diagnosed if i can't find the problem with honda-tech's help.

try pumping the clutch pedal a bunch of times before you shift. sounds like either your clutch master cylinder is out, or your clutch fluid just needs to be bled. either way, don't force it without rev-matching, you'll damage the transmission (very costly)
