I'm in the middle of getting the 5spd tranny in my 88 Civic. Seeing if you guys got any tips. no tranny jack so just using a regular floor jack to raise it. Its just a regular sohc (d-series) motor. everything stock!!

I've done this once before and it went on smooth. But this one is a big *** pain. It does not want to go in. And yes its the right clutch/input shaft. Everything is corret it just wont go in!!!
Realign your clutch. That's always the problem people run in to. I tried one of those plastic tools and it sucked. It should go right in without much pushing. I ended up using an actual input shaft from a spare tranny to get it aligned.

When you're done you will smack yourself in the face for trying soo hard to force it in when all you had to do was get the alignment right.

Checked it realigned. Got it nicely in there (the alignment tool) doubled checked after tightening that it was aligned. Tried to put the tranny on again!!! NO LUCK. it goes in but is hitting the pilot bearing or at least I think so. Its pissing me of big time. haha I was grunting over it for 2 hours of lifting a tranny and trying to put it in place!! Not fun... good work out.. but not fun!!
I'm waiting till tomorrow to finish it up to damn frustrated. And just a little fyi I have put many trannies on and never came across one this stubbern

I always pull the motor and tranny together and change the tranny on the floor, SOOO much easier.
If you have a helper, put a 17mm on the crank pully and turn it back and forth so the splines will line up while you are trying to push the tranny in.

the last time i pulled my tranny i bought an alignment tool from the autoparts store and had the same problem so i used a 3/8 drive 10mm deep well socket with a little electrical tape around the base of the socket and i still use that

haha you know I think I know exactly what you mean cuz i actually used a 10mm to see if it lined up right. What I ended up doing is cuttign the tip of the alignment tool (well used a dremel) and measured it with the 10mm tip. just got done aligning looks good. I also remembered the easier way to install the tranny willl explain more when I'm done. stopped in to get some water.
Just for the record 88 Trannies have a different spline count than 89-2000. So if you're swapping in a tranny from a different year you would need the clutch disc and flywheel from the newer tranny as well.
Hope this helps

I am fully aware of the differences in clutches. I was running a 86 integra flywheel, clutch, pressure plate. They have the same spline count as 88 Civic, but bigger.
I installed the 86 integra flywheel with no pilot bearing cuz I looked through the factory manual, called parts store looked on the crank (d16a1) and input shaft of the tranny and there was no pilot bearing to be found. So I decided to run mine without it.
Well then I got responses that I will ruin my input shaft bearing so I decided to use my 88 Civic flywheel which is identical to the integra except the back is different. still mounts fine.
An so now I am pulling the motor cuz the nothing wants to line up. hopefully be able to diagnose what is going on better to.
Alright thanks guys.

yeah i think it was. when i took the motor out i aligned it to perfection. then went to put the tranny on still no good. Kept on for about 5 minutes and finally!!! it went on. Put the motor back in and started it up. purs nicely. Cant wait to put my exhaust on so I can test drive it.
Thanks for the help guys. And yes an input shaft does seem like a really good idea.
