Default Z6 vs Y8

For those of you who are only going to say search, I did search, and yes, I found plenty on this topic, but I still need more opinion

On a 95 EX, would it be worth putting a Y8 head on there? From what I understand I'll only get like an extra 3-5 hp, has anybody done this b4 and know if it's worth it?

keep the Z6 head. as you probably noticed in your search, it flows better than the Y8 head.
the Y8 tranny on the other hand, is better than the Z6 tranny which you've probably read also. steel shift forks (Y8) > aluminum shift forks (Z6). so you might want to consider getting one of these instead

i still haven't seen any proven dyno numbers from doing this "upgrade" yet.

if you can get the intake manifold, or the whole head for free then its worth it, but the little power you will see from it isnt worth the hassle of wiring the other dizzy for obd1 and all the labor involved in the swap.

I shouldn't have to rewire hte dizzy if I just swap the IM, right?

Maybe that's what I'll do, my friend's g/f has a 97 EX and I'm pretty sure that's a D16Y8 (if it's not, I'll just go find one from somebody else, they're common enough), and my friend's putting a C1 in there when he gets around to it, and he'll probably end up junking the motor, so I could take whatever I need off of it, it probably wouldn't make that much of diff but I was j/w if I should take the head off..

I did read that the Z6 head flows better than the Y8 head, but I thought it would still work better with the Y8 mani/head oppose to the Y8 mani/Z6head because they're made for each other...

As for the tranny, I didn't read anything about that, but since i'm not pulling the engine I really don't see a need to change the tranny, if i did though the only complaint I have is I'd lower 5th gear a bit because it's too high, you have to be doing like 65 to have power in 5th and it becomes a pain in the ***, I have lots of reg. roads that are long and **** by me w/ 55 mph limits, if i put it in 5th, as soon as I hit a hill it can't go up unless i downshift because it's at like 2400 RPMs, it kinda sux....but that's a whole different story - but long and short, I'ma keep the tranny..

So what's the general consensus, I'm better off just changing the IM or the whole head? From what I could tell changing just the IM would be more efficient :-\

Oh yeah? How much of a difference did you feel? I didn't even think I'd feel any difference, just thought I'd have ~5 hp and that'd just give me a bit more kick (hey, it's for free, right?)..

So if I just swap the mani, what else will I need? since it just came out of a car and he's swapping to B series, it'll have the TB and IACV on it already, will I have to change the dizzy as well? Anybody with any more input would be great...

Thx

just leave it alone, theres no point in changing just the IM, let alone the head. the 3hp differance between z6/y8 is due to compression and timing. either way, 3hp is not enough to do a whole head swap and IM. sure you can swap the IM without any other changes, but if you feel a differance its gonna be in your head.

just trying to save you some time. i would however get any parts off the y8 you can, maybe part it out, or sell it.

a friend of mine just swapped his IM on his Z6 for a Y8 one and he loves it and says that he can feel the differance. but as far as swapping the head i would keep the stock Z6 head due to the timing issue when going OBD1 with the Y8 since they have differant ignition maps in the ecu.

oh no, no, no....

That's why a week ago teh conversation went like "Bobby, can I take the IM and sensors off that Y8 when u take it out" "it's a D series, I'll probably end up putting it into somebody who blows their engine and needs a cheap replacement..and another Y8 manifold I can find at a junk yard"

Today:**

*was at his shop*
*mexican kid comes in - very scrawny I might add*
"Are you Bobby?"
"yes"
"Eddie said to come to you about civics...I blew the engine on my 94 hatch and need a new one"
"What motor ya need?"
said trim (which I don't remember which)(quicky followed by), "but I don't need the same motor, I'd prefer a D16 because people say they're reliable and I commute 2 hours a day to work"
"your in luck, I'm pulling a D16Y8 outta my g/f's car, I'll sell it to you, how much u wanna pay for it?"
"I'll pay you 1200...I have to wait until monday to have the $ though"
"what? twelve? umm, yeah, uhh, I'll have it out by the end of the week"

*guy walks out*

*bobby looks at me*

"sorry man, ****, 12 hundred, I can't fukin beat that"

I was in awe, I was thinking it'll go for 600 or so and the guy would start at like 400...

I was wrong, if Pedro wants to spend that much money, ****, bobby'll sell it to him for that much....bobby didn't set the price, but ****, I'd sell it for that much too, it's like if somebody offered me 11 grand for my civic as is, I'd run home and get an MV-82 form and the title so fast it'd make ur head spin...
