91 EX Shifting Problems?
I don't think my Automatic tranny on my 91 Ex is going into the last "gear". It seems like it should shift one more time but, it doesn't. What RPM should I be getting at say, 55-60-65-70? Is that a good way to tell if it is shifting to the final gear? The car has about 200,000 miles on it.
Thanks you guys.

well i dont have an EX but i got two much similar to yours
i believe at 70 the tachometer should be at 3.5 about, if its around 4 you might have a problem
just take an easy pace constant acceleration ride from stop to 70, the 4th gens shift hard so you should be able to feel/count the gears
do you have the 'sport' switch?

hmm, see cuz some of them with that button had problems of it staying engaged im just wondering if thats whats happpeenign with you cuz that would explain the rpms staying higher
What RPMs are you running at 70 mph?

I think your problem may be with the lock-up solenoids. You would know for sure, if it was staying in 3rd gear. The rpms would be way up. What does your transmission fluid look like? Changing the fluid, and cleaning the lock-up solenoids may help. Good luck
I can't say what the RPM is at 70. I don't remember. I am out of town today, not with the car. Yesterday driving to the airport made me think of it.
Not sure about the fluid. I don't mind changing it. Don't remeber when the last time it was changed. I'd have to look in the book. Where is the lock-up solenoid and how to clean it?
Thank you...

There are two sets of solenoids. The shift solenoids and the lockup solenoids. They are easy to see from the front of the car. They are bolted to the side of the trans and each have two small cylinders on them, and I think a two wire plug going to them. I'm not sure which ones are the shift solenoids, and which are the lockups. You could just take both of them off while your at it, and clean the screens with brake cleaner, and re-install. You may need new gaskets (not sure).
If you want to work on your car, and do your own maintenance, you should get a service (repair) manual for it. Happy Hondaing
