Default Performance Muffler does nothing

if you are below 3K rpm, except make noise. True or false? In fact, it will rob you of low end. Are there exceptions?

true to some extent. if you have a worn out stock muffler thats resticting flow at low rpm then any change will help. other than that it wont make much differance until the upper region. i dont see any muffler (w/out other changes) causing a loss in low end. thats saying that the cat is still there and all.

You're being way too vague. Are you talking just a muffler, no change to exhaust pipe and factory cat? Is the new muffler the same diameter or larger? Are you talking about a straight through muffler, or a Flowmaster? Is the motor completely stock? I can think of cases where changing the muffler will make no difference, and cases where changing the muffler will make all the difference in the world. The muffler is the most restrictive part of the exhaust.

there are too many variable to consider when making such a general statement. Engine compression, transmission gearing, exhaust piping diameter, and overall muffler design are only a few of the variables that will contribute to different power gains or losses. If you take a bone stock 4 cylinder engine, put 2.5" piping, straight pipe, and straight through muffler, yes you will sacrifice bottom end torque but theoretically should gain top end HP
