When I first put my AEM CAI, it was loud throughout the RPM, recently it's been quieting down and now I barely hear the roar, if ever. I can still hear it humming during idle and everything is still connected. What's wrong with it?

 

Have you ever cleaned the filter? Perhaps its just dirty? Done anything to the exhaust?

When I first got my intake thats all I could hear from the car, the stock exhaust was so quiet. Then I got the bright idea to pull the muffler off, and just run it like that. It brought the exhaust note up a bit, enough to cover the intake, but not enough to scream "HERE I AM PIGGY'S!!"

 

I installed it tuesday of last week, and I looked at the filter earlier and it looks new still.

EDIT:: It roared with a stock exhaust, because the CAI itself roared not the engine or exhaust.

Ok, then it definitly isn't a dirty filter.

 

It somehow dismounted from the intake manifold yesterday, but I reconnected it right away and still no roar.

 

the pipe is probably clogged up with something.. clear the clog. does the engine still have power? maybe something else went wrong.
also im gonna give some advise. if you are just daily driving you dont need a cai.
in fact you will suck up water from the road with it when it is raining,(or driving through a poddel and bend something important like a connecting rod or a valve. and nobody wants that.

you should cut the pipe in half and move the filter somewhere in the engine bay, like behind the headlight. you WONT notice a difference in power or sound, if anything it will be louder.

if you still dont want to cut the pipe down then at least look into getting a BYPASS VALVE. AEM makes them just for your intake and just for the purpose of not sucking up water. they are alot cheaper than a new motor. only 50 bucks i think.

 

There's no loss in power, it just doesn't roar. It seems like rainy season ended last week, so I think I'm okay. Probably going to get a bypass valve next week. I'll probably take it off and have a look when I do my headers later today.

 

well i just looked into it and it was clear. any other suggestions?

 

dont think a by-pass would help,
unless we get 2 feet of water...
i had one, and took it off, when i decided to put it back on, i looked through the pipe to see gunk that collected when it was on..started heavy at the filter and lighter as it went towards the TB...not cool

 

The bypass filters are junk. It's debateable whether they're needed or if they even help.

 

the aem bypass suck. if your running a cai and your not lucky your gona suck up water even if you have a bypass. its all on your luck. but if you want to beat the odds then relocate the filter inside the engine bay.

 

pop the hood and let the car idle hit the butterfly on the throttle and if you hear the intake suck then its fine mayb it just broke in u cant expect an intake to sound like a FI setup its a pipe with a filter

 

If there is no loss in power, then I wouldn't be too concerned. Your computer more than likely has compensated for the increased airflow from the installation of your CAI which might explain the difference in sound.

 

No the computer cant compensate for anything.....thats why its programmed the way it is. The filter is just broken in, it happens to everyone's intakes....watch if you buy a new filter (dont really!) it will sound like you just pulled the cai out of the box. Trust me "we" all love that sound....thats why we have honda's! Maybe you should get an exhaust if you dont already have one and make it sound 100 times better.

 

you're just getting used to it man. its like when you first get an exhaust system and you're like...damn its too loud..then you get used to it and its just a little hum now so dont sweat it too much.

He just installed it a week ago. You can clean them when they are dirty anyways without having to buy a new one(about every 6 months recommened).

Every intake I have bought has sounded the same since I bought them new. I have never had a noticable decrease in the sound.

 

If it's broken in, that sucks but oh well. I'm getting a ws2 next week from truehonda. my friends said the sound never goes away, so i really thought it would be loud forever. I took it off and put it on again and it gained a little more sound for like 10 minutes Thanks for the info guys, now to put my exhaust and header on without my car falling on me.

 

It should be loud forever, I have never heard of this sort of problem before.

 

haha.. Just buy a new filter for the sound. Other then that theres no bother
