Default Clutch life.

What is the earliest any of you had to replace your R's clutch?

Mine makes a creaking/squeaking noise right at the bite point when I am inching forward in 1st without touching the throttle. This is the only thing I can directly notice since it has just started happening within the past week or so.

Car has 15K miles of highway/street/road course driving. No formal drag racing, hardly any drag-style launches. I do a lot of heel/toe downshifting on street and track. Could my clutch be nearing the end?

I had the same symptom as you, Ross. Spring seats on the pressure plate loosen up, and the clutch won't fully disengage. Does it only seem to happen after the car is warm? Does it make shifting dificult at times? I've seen numerous threads here with the same problem. I just looked at it as a great opportunity to upgrade to an aftermarket clutch/PP

I want to know that something is wrong for sure before I go upgrading clutch and flywheel. What did you upgrade to? I will check on the rest of the symptoms and get back to ya.

Misfit - yeah I am not exactly in MD. Maybe we can get a bunch of R guys together and hit the strip...I've never run my R at a dragstrip and I'm curious.

Anyone else about the clutch?

dont worry about your clutch!

mine is still going strong after 64k km´s of hard driving, although it´s kinda hard to shift to 4th if I´m racing..

Ross, I lived with the problem for at least 4k miles, it got gradually worse, it was bearable having to be in neutral or hold the brake down with the clutch at the stop lights, but mine became increasingly difficult to shift into gear, and I didn't want to put any extra wear on the tranny. I got an Exedy organic clutch/pp, and things were just fine.

I am having no problems shifting. I can just feel it squeaking at the bite point and wanted to see if it was normal. A friend of mine mentioned something about lubricating the clutch in his VR6?

My first one failed at 27k miles, the second a couple weeks ago at 73k. In both cases a piece broke off the clutch disk near a damper spring (different piece each time). In both cases, the elapsed time from first symptom to failure was very short -- on the same day.

well my clutch lasted an big 13,500 after I warped the pressure plate and the clutch started only grabbing on the inside (I'll post pics). Now I've got exedy, toda, and ATS working for me

had mine replaced at 20k, but it was because of a dry release bearing. put the fly wheel in while it was out. clutch covered under warranty

I just started experiencing the exact same problem yesterday. Would this be covered under warranty with only 25000 KM??

mine is now squeaking even harder, and maybe I'm just imagining it, but it might not be grabbing as hard.

Any recommendations on aftermarket clutch? I'm already pretty much settled on the Comptech aluminum flywheel. I want something that grabs harder than stock but not too snatchy as this is my daily driver.

My 23k replacement was covered under warranty. The 73k was not and apparently would not have been if I'd gotten the extended warranty either.

I put an Exedy in as the replacement, hoping it will last longer; I wasn't unhappy with the OE performance, just the durability. I haven't really had it long enough to give you an opinion of it yet. The pedal is a bit firmer, seems to engage more smoothly (numbly??). I think the pedal throw needs adjusting (for less) because at rest if I push it all the way to the floor I can hear something rub and then spin up slowly. I haven't had it adjusted yet, so I'm trying to learn to shift without pushing the clutch to the floor until then.

I got the Exedy from clutchcityonline.com, which I took a chance on. Called them up and Charlie was helpful and the price was good (lots less than stock or Comptech's ACT) so I went ahead and got it. No problems with the order, and he even sent it to my dealer (which they don't usually do) where the car was parked waiting for me to make up my mind. I'd wanted the ACT but it was backordered everywhere we looked (someone here IM'd me after it was too late, though, saying where I could find one). However, people on here like the Exedy too (you'll have to take my word for it until 'search' is fixed...), so I'm hopeful it'll work out.

i had the same problems with the clutch for about 3 months till about last friday. I threw the car in reverse and the whole car died. At first i thought it was just my feet but it happened like three times consistently. Also when shifting gears at highway speeds the rpms would drop all the way to zero and then climb back up. I took it to get replaced and my mechanic said i had only about a couple of days left before the clutch would totally go out.
