crazy swap
i was thinking about doing a project gas mileage car. Starting with either a 88 or 89 crx hf or dx. My idea would be to successfully swap in an HX motor and achieve superior gas mileage. Would this be out of the question? The reason for choosing the HX motor is that it makes 45 mpg in a 2300 pound hx, and makes 115hp, which is leaps and bounds above the hp rating of the base model crx's. My thinking is this: An hx motor in a crx would be fun to drive becuase of that added power AND because it should get even BETTER mileage in a lighter crx. Would the hardest part be converting the car from obd0 to obd2? Does anyone think this swap is do-able? I would probably want to keep the hx transmission. Does the hx come equipped with a hydraulic transmission? Im thinking that would be hard to do also, equipping a cable transmission car with a hydro tranny. I doubt any of you have done this swap, but what from you all know, does it seem possible or not?
What about the 92-95 civic vx 1.5 vtec-e....? Its obd1 and people get rid of them dirt cheap ..Keep the stock hf tranny, convert to obd1 and run the 5 wire o2 with the stock vx ecu...Youd get great mpg out of that to...
Im not sure about the HX swap though,,

been done almost as many times as a B16 swap.
hasport used to sell a kit... but i didnt find it on their website, but I know it exists.

gas mileage mostly depends on how you drive. you dont want a lot of power if you want good gas milage, cuz then you will be tempted to beat on it, which drinks gas. starting out is what takes up the most gas, accelerating at freeway speeds also takes up some gas. hell i would say go for the hybrid honda (insight) keep the thing slow enough, and the engine itself wont even turn on, so no gas.

if you want a good gas milage cable tranny get the STD hatch 4speed tranny
to run the HX motor it would be easiest to convert to obd1 and delete the injector resistor box

i understand what burns gas, and what doesnt. My thing is if i want to go for a sprited drive, i can, or if i want to drive like a 70 year old and get 50-60 mpg i can also.

No,,the hf tranny he has now is way better..That 4spd keeps the revs to high on the highway,,needs one more gear in my opinion..

from what i've been told std is hf -5th.
revs seem to agree being a former 4spd owner.

They key to better milage is usually diff than most people think. The thing that really kills mpg is acceleration, and not driving smoothly. Accelerate slowly, don't bring the revs up too high, but also don't lug the motor. Driving smoothly is not tailgating, and having to be on/off the gas a lot - keep a constant speed. Also, 65mph saves much more gas than 75-80. With all but long trips, going faster only saves a minute or two.
Also, I don't believe in a high-geared tranny, at least not to the extend others do. No matter what motor/trans goes in there, you only need a few HP to keep speed at 70mph. A STD tranny may drop revs, but to make the same power, you'll need more throttle. I've always wanted to make calulations on rev vs vacuum. Doing 60-mph, 4th gear in my car is something like 16 in/Hg, but 5th gear is ~12in/Hg.
BTW - just a few minutes the gassavers website and I saw a 70mpg CX. I honestly think the reason the CX/HF/etc get good gas milage is because they can't make much power during normal acceleration (and there's no beifit to reving for 'performance'). The HX/VX get good milage & power because they have good swirl in the cyl at lower rpm, and (non-cali) have the wbo2.
Anyways, g/l with it. I'd be curious about an HX/VX motor running obd1 with uberdata tuned correctly. You could set vtec easily, and also dial in AFR using the script that keeps the ecu from swinging AFR much (when its actively correcting it). If I ever find one, I may try it out. I'm struggling to get 28+ mpg in my $75 ford probe beater.
