Default Decisions......................

I have a 1996 civic ex coupe with 92k miles. I also live in Cali, so everything needs to be legal and pass smogs/etc. This is my only car/DD

I want to start working on this car, but I don't wan't to sacrafice reliability. Can this be done with a turbo? Im guessing no. So right now im leaning towards NA, even though I know the car won't be as fast.

I have the stock d16y8, and im guessing right now its around 105 whp(correct?). Lets say my first goal would be 130 whp. What should I do? Any suggestions are more than welcome.

Thanks in advance.

make your honda look nice but dont spend to much money..
our lil sohc cant put out to much power unless you go turbo, but I'd rather save that money and get a b18

its worth it bro, its worth it

Screw the bolt ons, youll probably get 10 hp max and for a lil sohc thats nothen to brag about, drop in a turbo, greddy makes legal ones, but remember if its gonna be your daily get it tuned right and you shouldnt have any problems. Another thing if you have money for a turbo why not get a b16a2 or b18 instead? and work the bolt on's on that, b series motors have way more potential then a d series and those motors are legal in california

Go ahead, get a b series, blow it up and then shell out bunch more money to get another B, or you can boost the D and walk all over any B in your area who has most of the easy bolt ons that are available.

<~~~~~D Series for LIFE!!!!!

I think it would be a shame to get a new motor..this one is only 92 k....

How much do the greddy kits go for? $2000?

You can get a D Series GReddy kit for like $1300 without an intercooler and like $50 for a DSM side mount!

Don't say you haven't seen numerous threads on here of people spinning rod bearings, bending valves, throwing rods through the side of the block stock without bolt ons. It can be done!

no, ive never heard of that... my friend hasnt even done that yet.. and he brings his car to about 9500 wen he races in PA...i dont wanna go againts the D series... but having done my own b series swap last month.... i will NEVER go back to a d series... my motor is bone stock (minus short ram) and it will spin second hard with my 02 EX rims on my car... im sorry man, but a D series jsut isnt as fun as a b series (both stock mind you, ive never driven a modified d series) but i do miss the tall gearing in the trans that i lost when going to my b16.. But what ever you do... do it for you man. were here to offer suggestions and advice/help. but remember your the person driving your car everyday. so you do you. but id love to see a turbo d series... they are slowly coming out of the shadows. so to what ever you decide to do

Thanks for all your replies.

Basically I still can't decide to go NA or FI. I realize that FI is better powerwise.

So if I get the greddy turbo kit and run 6 psi, will my car be just as reliable as if I went NA?

Cause Im still in HS, and money is hard to get by, and I don't want unecessary repairs.

Not being an ******* or nething...just put want when ur saying "I want this job" instead of "I wan't this job"

If you want 130HP the best cost efficient way would be to swap an LS engine in it. I put a complete LS in my car for about 800$. (so cali). I sold my D-series for 300$ making the complete LS a 500$ investment. Trust me, its worth it. It is no longer a challenge merging into the freeway, and i even beat my friends 95 Prelude... (up until about 4th gear anyway.)

92K on your motor is not a waste if you get rid of it.. its a waste if you keep it... (Unless you decide to boost -> 2500$)

If you get an LS make sure the year of the engine is the same year as your car or newer

i say turbo your car. with that low milage it would be a waste to get rid of the motor unless you havn't been keeping w/ the regular maintenance. getting someone REALLY GOOD to tune your turbo'd car will make it reliable.

Assume that everything you do will remove its smog legality.

Get smogged, start modifying. That said, everything on H-T is based on prices.

Some people can throw together a junkyard turbo kit for less than $1500. For that price, that is basically best power to cost.

But then if you can get a deal on a b-series then thats the way to go. AT FIRST. Once you decide you want more power you'll have to pay more for parts, etc.,. Granted, you CAN make more power because of the dual cams, but overall it will cost more money.

Just some things to think about. You need to decide what your goals are and how much you want to spend.

99-00 ex header
68mm throttle body
cam gear
misc rebuild parts, belts/gaskets
