aspiring racer
i want to get into the road race scene...i really have no idea where to start...i was told to do autocross first, but i dunno how to get started their either...i currently have a 95 accord, im in the process of getting a new car...first choice of mine is a 02-03 WRX, or a 98-01 2.5rs, s14 240sx, DC2 integra, in that order...i really dont have much money to spend, i work part time at $7.50/hr...i dont expect to racing racing head on right away, but just want to get on the track and really gets ome experiance, i live in portland and PIR(Portland International Raceway) is not very far from me...the best way i told to get some experiance was to participate in a HPDE event, but i really dont have a couple hundred bucks to spare...is there really no way for me to get on the track and off the mountain roads????
look up local autocross clubs around your area. Google works pretty well
Or go to http://www.scca.com and look up solo2 in your region

Your moving in the correct direction. If you keep up with the "mountain roads" you will eventually spend way more than doing it legally in a controlled environment.
With your limited budget, auto-x is where you need to focus. HPDE's at Portland can be had for $129 with previous experience and $159 for a 1st timer with http://www.cascadesportscarclu...=home and $149 with http://www.teamcontinental.com/
Plus there are many more ways to get invloved in road racing. You could volunteer to work corners which gets you closer to the action than anyone else. Come out the track and meet people, you may hit it off with someone and help out as crew. I have seen many a racer donate the car to a good crew member for a drivers school.
Here is a schedule to ICSCC http://www.icscc.com/schedule.html

If you dont have the money to do an HPDE event there is a way you can attend for free.
Most clubs will trade work for track time. What I mean is if you work a corner station for a day you will earn 1 days worth of track time.
Contact your local NASA director and speak to them about how their system works.
It is the most cost effective way to get started.

Come out to PIR May 6/7. That's our first race of the year.

He won't always be making $7.50 per hour, so give him a break.
As others have said, start autocrossing. Everytime you think about buying a cool go-fast part, you need to train yourself to not buy it! Save your money so you can get out on the track.
Have you been to any club racing events at PIR? If NASA doesn't run there, try SCCA. Go to the track and walk around, talk to some drivers, and start learning as much as you can. See if you can help someone that is local to you at the track crewing for them. Even if its only washing the windshield, helping change tires, and being an extra hand if necessary.
Read a few books on racing such as Going Faster and Speed Secrets. Going to watch club racing events is not expensive but will help you learn what its about. You can also volunteer at club races to get an even closer look at what goes on. (Free track entry, lunch, and a lot of appreciation from people. You'll also make a lot of very good connections while learning and having fun.)

i'm lookin to get into this too. I live not far from you up in seattle right around the corner from pacific raceway. Currently i'm saving saving saving so that I can get a cheapy *** car to get track time in. Not taking my daily on the track and not going to waste money on modding the **** out of a car before getting track time.

Check with local tracks and clubs to see if you can work for them for some track time. Autox is probably the best place to start though.
And Road Racing isn't a "scene"

Oregon Region SCCA runs a lot of races at PIR but you are not going to see any seat time in street car. You'll find a lot more racers at an ICSCC event vs an SCCA event. Like 150-200 racers vs. 75-100. And you don't have to endure a 5 car Spec Racer Ford field.
