Default Shimming a resurfaced flywheel... necessary??

I just had my flywheel resurfaced. It appears that very little was taken off of the flywheel. Is shimming a must? I'd never heard of anyone doing it except on flywheels that had been done more than once. My friend says you always have to shim them. I don't see how thousands of an inch could make a difference as long as the cluch plate is still riding completely on the splines.

Is shimming necessary one a 1st time resurfaced flywheel?

Thanks.
