hey, i am finishing off buying the last little bit of parts for my turbo z6 build and im alitle lost on the valvetrain stuff.
i tried to do some searches here, and the search server is down again
i didnt find much info on turbod16 or through google either
if anyone could give me alittle help on seat pressure, open pressure, coil bind and max lift etc etc. that i need, that would be great.
none of that stuff i have a clue on
i would hate to order the wrong springs and ruin a cam or even worse the motor.
motor specs:
z6
pistons/rods
t3t4e 57 trim, 63 turbine
ramhorn, 3 in DP/exhaust
750's
neptune
shooting for ~ 400 whp
the head is stock (ie not p&p'd) and i will be keeping a stock (or close to) stock rev limit
ill be running a Zex 59300 cam,
the specs on the cam are:
Z6 59300
Advertised Duration 260/268
Duration @ .050 220/216
Valve Lift 455/430
i know there are deals in the sponsors forum on supertech springs as well as a few others, but i want to make sure i get the right ones first.
if there is any other info you need or i left out, please ask
thanks in advance
Kelly

i know they say that you should use the zex springs and retainers, but i also know there are alot of other people using other springs and retainers
how much did you pay for the zex springs and retainers
EDIT:

if you are staying at or around stock redline you dont need springs or retainers, i had the cam in my car without any and revved to 7400 all day, since then i have replaced them and rev higher but in your instince nothing needs to be replaced just drop the cam in.

i would rather get the springs and retainers in for piece of mind.
i would hate to lose a motor because i skimpped on ~ $300 for springs and retainers.
i havent seen anyone with a deal on zex springs/retainers in the sponosrs forum or i would get those
if anyone can give me a decent deal on them, feel free to pm me (Kelly.)

i have the specs you need somewhere, i will try to look them up for you tomorow.
it is ideal to match the spring to what the manufacturer suggests for their cam. there are big variances in spring rate between say the crower and the zex/comp cams springs for the z6. If you use a spring with more seat and open pressure you will always be putting the additional pressure on the components and pads. Also, installed height is a little different too between the crower and zex stuff. retainer fit will be different between the two as well. i have tried.

np man, glad i could help.
usdm 4g vtec,
it may work for you and i have heard of it working for others. That cam, it has more lift, more duration, a smaller base circle and more aggresive ramp rates then stock.

first of all it will work for everyone its not like honda made the stock d16z6 springs with different seat pressure, if you keep stock redline you wont ruin your motor nothing will break, no sense in spending 300 bucks you dont need too when it could go towards something more important.

I have the cam in my car for close to three years daily driving like 80 miles a day. No problems with a motor with good mileage never had any issues at all. I ensured to adjust the valves every so often and that is it. I dont rev past redline and the stock retainers on the d16 are pretty light and hard to beat. The titanium ones wear out faster. The zex springs are like 160 so it would be good insurance and you will be able to rev higher.

yea i agree. All I run on mine is the zex springs. No need for the retainers.

i see your point but,
if you were supposed to use stock valvetrain zex wouldnt say you need to use a upgraded valvetrain
people have made 600 whp on stock sleeves, doenst mean every block can handle 600 whp..
personal preference i guess.

how much hp are you making?
my car is not daily driven.
i bring my car out to race, either street or track.
if you are daily racing a 400 whp sohc for 3 yrs, then id consider no springs, until then, it is $300 worth of insurance i guess

btw its called marketing so you buy more of their stuff, just an fyi...
edit: btw i have crower springs and retainers now and havent had a problem with them at all and rev to 9k occasionally
but that wasnt done for reliability it was done to increase the size of my powerband

the cam manufacturer recomends the upgraded valvetrain components
they dont tell you u MUST get the upgraded components
they know the typical ricer will buy it and rev the **** out of a motor to get more power
the cam can make more power at a higher redline, but most of us people here that have it on stock springs, dont need or want to go over 7200-7500 range anyways
theres no valve float on a D16 unless u go beyond 7500
for the guy who told me the cam had more lift, duration and stronger profile... NO **** Holmes!!!! thats what i got it
i daily drive mine, and i make 235whp, for over year and a half... and theres no problems..

thanks for the input guys.
i didnt want this to turn into a "should i run stock springs/retainers with a zex 59300" thread.
i respect both of your decisions, but for my piece of mind, i would rather have aftermarket ones in the head
ima call Zex Man monday and see what kinda deal i can get on them

thanks guys,
i bought mine cam and springs from this guy on ebay http://stores.ebay.com/Atlanti...Parts
best seller i've dealt with on ebay. i paid around $165 shipped.
he sells the retainers too if u want to buy them. i optd to use the stock ones.
