Default my reverse lights turn on in 5th

Driving today and my friend who was behind me noticed that my reverse lights turn on when i put the car in 5th gear. Any idea why this might be happening?

Maybe a short? I would suggest look under the center console by the shifter and see if your reverse light is shorting against the 5th gear light... I'm assuming you have a dashboard gear display? Do your reverse lights turn on when you put the car in reverse as well, or only in fifth? If it's only in fifth then maybe your wires are just crossed.

Philly

EDIT: This is my uneducated opinion... the one above probably makes more sense...

where is the reverse sensor for this??

there are no wires @ all undede the shiter boot... no gear indicator display.

reverse lights turn on in 5th and in reverse.. I hope it isnt a shirt.. that coudl lead to some pretty bad problems... Where am i best to look for the ground issue?

You either have a bad sensor, bad wiring or the inside of your tranny is fucked.

my friends usually drive behind me and this is the first ive heard of it... i dont think my tranny is fucked, its only got maybe 6000 km's on it. Also dont think its the wiring.

Do i have to pull the tranny and remove the case to get at the sensor?

No, it's on the outside of your tranny. It's probably a problem in your trans. If you dont want to deal with it, I'd unplug the sensor so it doesn't light up in 5th. You wont have reverse lights, but you'll probably stay out of more trouble than if they were coming on during 5th. Then again, you might get rammed backing out of a parking spot

Man, your about to pay around $60 an hr. in labor for those bastards to do about the easiest thing in the world???
All you need to do the job is:
-gasket
-torque wrench
-oil n filter (unless your re-using)
-half hour
I'm sorry bro, but unless you REALLY don't know how to work on a car, this is just cake work and it'll save you money.

BTW are your sure it's the reverse lights, and only in 5th?

family friend, labour is free, i only pay for parts, i just dont want to fiddle with it.. ie also got to get my M/C bled and a few other things,

yes, when we got back to my appartment i ran thru the gears, with a friend standing behind the car. The reverse lights come on in 5th and reverse. I even got out to look.

yes i know how to work on my car, lol me and my dad did the build

edit: pics for more hits..
