Default HOW DO YOU KNOW IT'S A GSR TRANNY

ok i went out and got a tranny that i thought was a GSR now i don't know

it's tagged y80 if i remember correctly but my other GSR is a s80

i tried to look and everywhere it says that they both could be a GSR OR an LS tranny how do you know does anyone know how to read into the other #'s on that sticker i need one of these to put in my QUAIFE and i don't want to try and fit it into an ls tranny then start over with the right one or atleast know they are the same

You'll know as soon as you crack it open. If the ring gear fits on your "known to be GSR Quaife" then thats what you got- a GSR trans. If not it a B16 or LS trans.

Also the middle shift fork is different on a LS then a B16 or GSR.

well if you want to get creative you could install axles and rig up a crue measuring device so you can calculate how far each axle rotates per turning the shaft. reverse mathify it using known gear ratio and final drive ratio and you can determine which tranny you have. you could probably do all of that with some creativity and a tripto home depot.

Asking it what it came out of would be easier then putting in the axles and counting the revs! lol

Seriously I would take it apart...

Take it appart are you people idiots?!?!

Put a used clutch disc on it (or not disc just makes it easier) make a mark on the clutch (or shaft) and the bellhousing.

On the axle side make a mark on the housing and the diff or slide an old CV joint in there.

Put the shift linkage into 5th.

Turn the clutch until the diff makes one full turn.

3.05 (just past 3 turns) is an LS. 4.266 x 0.714

3.46 (almost 3 and a half) is a GSR. 4.4 x 0.787

It'll take you 5 minutes vs. OPENING your transmission.

Opening your trans if for people who still do math on their fingers.

Idiots are people like you who buy a used trans and just put it in your car without going through it. To make sure everything else is good.

pull off the axle seal and look in there....youll be able to tell by what kind of bearing it has...gsrs have tapered roller bearings Ls and b16 have sealed ball bearings...

except for the 2000-2001 gsr that will have the same sealed ball bearing as a Type R ...whgci is bigger then the b16 Ls bearings.... unless you have a newer gsr transmission you should not see a sealed ball bearing on the diff...

or you could be like the idiot that just called everyone idiots and do it the ******** way

also if you open it you can just look at the 3rd gear sleeve set .....theres a U on the middle hub...on gsrs it will be upside down like this" n " and LS b16 " u"

umm...drive it? haha das how i always tell if its a gsr, ls or b16. cruising speed on the freeway at 60mph in 5th gear should usually tell u what tranny it is. i know thats a primitive way of doing it but its always worked for me haha.

I answered him. Then the peanut gallery has to try to twist the question to meet their poor answers and make me out to be a dick.

Is you read what he wrote you would see that he is going to open a known GSR trans to put his Quaife in. I stick by my original assessment of you guys.

I did but not with the same test but the same math.

For someone who don't know alot, 5th gear is easy to find because of the reverse.
