Default Question about the B20 ???

I've been thinking about diferent setups to use on my 97 hatch, and i want to start off with something not too exspensive, but upgradeable later. I was thinking either a B18B with an Si(SiR here) tranny or B20 with an Si tranny. Now i know the bigger displacement is an obvious advantage, but will the lower redline of the B20 be a problem when using a close ratio tranny like the Si tranny??

P.S. I plan to go turbo later on down the road, once i've saved up enough.... (and i know the LS is a better tranny for that) but for now i'd like the Si tranny for better acceleration.

TIA

no it will just rev quicker. no prob there. just sustaining the mad high revs where your rotating mass is spinnging higher that usual will f you up.

From personal experience I would go with the B20 of course. But I would not use the Si tranny for a B20. Unless you like turning 4200 rpm at 70mph. Plus if your gonna go turbo one day soon I would with a 95 and up Gsr tranny. That's what I have and that way you'll still have some get up and go without forced induction. Good luck in your decision.

Yup. The GSR is the compromise between the two. (LS & Si/R)

You'll still have decent N/A acceleration, but the gears are slightly longer than the Si, beneficial for when you go FI.

Hey i have another question, that i'm having lots of trouble finding the answer to. And it's on the same topic so i figured i'd just use the same thread. NOw i've been told that no ecu's will idle the B20 very well, and that it will idle really low unless i get a chipped ecu or something. What are you guys using? not B20/vtec just stock B20 with Ls intake manifold.

Thanx again!

I'm using a 94 LS Ecu and have no problems at idle. The only problem I have with the ecu is that it likes to run the b20 a little lean at partial throttle.

b20zkid

by part throttle do you mean cruising throttle like 3K? Is it a "bad" kind of lean as in damaging? How about WOT, any leanness there?

thanks, It looks like i'm in the immediate market for a budget b20 setup as my trusty old '90 integra engine decided to squirt coolant out of the side of the head today. I don't have the moeny for a chipped compute and i'm hoping that my '90 LS ecu will suffice...

It really depends on throttle postion more than rpm. Good luck with the swap.
