ECU makes car die....whats goin on?
alright....just got back from the track and had some problems. i just got a jdm h22 to put into my car on easter and i also got a REAL spoon ecu to go with it. since the h22 isnt in my car yet, a friend that has a 93 prelude vtec decided to test out the p13 in his prelude and compare to his past runs. we installed it at his house and he drove with it all the way to the track, no problems. after he did the first run of 14.8@93.5mph i went back to the staging lanes to ask him some questions and he had the ecu in his hand and gave it back to me because he put his stock one back in. he said that he couldnt keep the car running when he got to the line. and when he was doing his burnout (yes, he was on slicks), it would just die. and then he had to crank it over 4 times to get it started so he could make his run. he already had his timing advanced from the distributor, and i know the ecu has some pretty wild settings im sure which include fuel maps, vtec crossover, and timing settings. im thinking that the fact that he already had his timing advanced, and then the ecu having some wild timing settings just wasnt working too well together. after he switched to just a jdm p13 it was fine. the spoon ecu is version 4, anyone know anything about that? i would like to know what is causing the car to die before i install it in my car when i do my swap. any ideas? sorry for the long post!
ahh, hard to tell. could be just his car with a different ecu, i'd do the swap in ur car and see how it works with ur car.....who knows. i also believe the distributors are different between usdm and jdm h22's (usdm having external coil's and jdm having internals), that MIGHT be it if i'm not mistaken. good luck
hymmm....never thought of that distributor idea but why would it just happen with external coil?
if there's still a prob, then has to be something wrong with the programming of the ECU obviously, other than that, that's pretty much the only difference between USDM and JDM h22's, other than hp output
I responded in the Prelude forum with the same questions too...
What Spoon ECU is it? Is it a Prelude P13, a P72 from a GS-R, a B16ECU...?
Also, what year is the H22a, and what injectors are you using in it?

I assume that the Spoon program is like most other aftermarket ECU maps and has some timing advance from stock... If his car's timing is already advanced manually on the distributor, this could explain the bad idle and stalling. The timing may just be advanced too far to run properly. Does it run better at higher rpm?

it ran fine, as long as he could keep it going. it shut off at the end of the track also. we were thinking the same thing about the timing already being advanced. but would that really make it shut down? nobody have any info on what exactly version 4 p13 spoon ecu has upgraded?
